gas. seriously. i had the gas-flutters for weeks and was convinced it was just gas because it was so sporadic. but now that the baby is kicking on a regular basis, i know what it feels like. and it still feels like gas.
I never had flutters with the first baby; he went straight to kicks. With Harris I felt them a couple times. Imagine a moth that is stuck in a light. It whacks and flies around in a frenzy for a couple seconds, bouncing off the walls, and then rests. The flutters aren't constant, more like little bursts here and there of some flittery movement. First kicks will feel like little pokes from the inside.
ETA: also, once you realize what it is, kicks often feel like muscle spasms in your abdomen. Once you've had the baby you will occasionally have a little muscle twitch in your belly and it will really make you feel like it was a baby kick.

This! And sometimes it feels like my stomach is twitching inside. Like if you were to have your eye twitching or something.
