4 month appt update & flat head question

James is 15lb 10oz and 24 inches.  Emma is 12lb 10oz and 23 inches.  The pedi is thrilled with their progress.

James has a terrible flat spot on the back of his head.  We have been working with him to get it evened out but the pedi said he will probably need to see a specialist.  If you had this, what type of specialist did you see and did your LO need a helmet to correct the situation?

Re: 4 month appt update & flat head question

  • Sam has a flat spot on his head that I was concerned about, but the Pedi just said we would reasses at the 9 month appt.  It seems to be getting better now that he is able to sit some and play in his exersaucer.
  • Sam still seems to have a flat spot on his even though he's been sitting up a ton more. I'm going to need it reassessed at the 9 month appt but I now my pedi feels helmets are over-prescribed.

Good to know.  I would hate to put him in a helmet if we don't have to do it.  We are going to try to keep him off the back of his head as much as we can, but at 4 months it is a little tough.

  • My daughters have those same bouncy seats! One was only 4lb11oz at birth and developed a flat spot after they decided they would only sleep in the bouncy seat. We have put them on the floor on a blanket more often since noticing it, and it is getting alot better since she can move her head around more.
  • My son has plagiocephaly & started in his helmet/band at 4 months. I know some dr's feel they're over prescribed & want ppl to try repositioning, etc but the consults at the places are free so it can't hurt to talk to them & make your decision. I'm very glad I pushed on it- my first pedi blew me off several times when I brought it up & I was planning to change pedis anyway for other reasons so I took my son in to the new one before our scheduled 4 mo visit just to have her look at his head and she took one look & referred me- the first one did not know what to look for & the new pedi knew how to look at his head  (from the top) & saw that his ears were already misaligned. He ended up being categorized as moderate to severe and the helmet is making huge progress. If you wait until 9 months & s/he really does have a problem, s/he will have to wear the helmet much longer than at 4 or 5 months when their head grows much faster.

Just my .02. Not saying your LO needs it but the consult is free & I'd personally rather be safe than sorry. PM me if you want. If you have a Cranial Technologies near you, that is the best place to go (www.cranialtech.com)

    GL!

thanks for the info!  I think I might push it to at least see a specialist.  His flat head is pretty severe and I would rather do it sooner than later.  Hopefully we can avoid the helmet by intervening early.
