Any tips on dealing with 'a climber'?

I have no reference for this.

DD (16 mos) wants to climb on everything.  I stop her from climbing on the table CONSTANTLY. I've even lost my temper and yelled and she'll cry and then 2 seconds later she's climbing back up.

Any tips?

  • Duct tape her feet to the floor? Maile's been an expert climber for 3 or 4 months now, and I still have no solution.
  • You can consistently take them off the object and tell them "No, do not climb".

Or, what I did, I spotted them until I became comfortable with them being able to navigate themselves.

DS2 is a huge climber and has now upped his game to taking my kitchen chairs and stools and moving them all around to help him climb on new things.

  • We have a bar height table and I don't mind if DS2 gets up on the chairs b/c he's fine but he won't stop there, he climbs onto the table and I don't want him up there. We just lay the chairs on the floor for now until he can learn not to climb on the table.

J does this too!  They currently have no chairs at their kids table b/c he was getting into so much mischief!

  • Redirection and each every time.  Eventually they learn that they won't get anywhere by continuing with that behavior.
