Also in the back of my head I had "I will do this until I figure out the problem. There are multiple solutions". Meaning - if I knew for sure that they couldn't tolerate dairy/soy I would always wean to a formula. Now I never even came close but in my head I knew I could.
Try sparkpeople to make sure your nutrition is in check. It's a moment in time. Hang in there. I really feel for you.

A, Tofutti products are really good. I've only tried the cream cheese, but I think I've heard the sour cream is also really good. Totally dairy, lactose, and milk protein free.
From what I've heard, the truly non-dairy cheeses are not worth bothering with. I've never tried any. Most I've seen have milk proteins in them, which sort of defeats the purpose, IMO.
How about some lentil soup? I made some really yummy lentil soup not too long ago using the prepared lentils from TJs.
You're not avoiding soy at this point, right? Maybe some Middle Eastern food (falafel in particular sounds really good right now).

DD#1 and DS seem to be sensitive to dairy. Well, all three were but they are having more trouble than DD#2. All three are "happy spitters" so there's not less spit up but it's less curdled or whatever. More than that, they would scream in pain and arch their backs when I was on dairy and that's almost completely stopped. With DD#1, I didn't think it made that much of a difference since it seemed to be gradual. I actually convinced myself that it was all in my head and had queso with lunch about two weeks after cutting dairy. She was screaming bloody murder within a few hours and we knew. I'm not 100% sure with DS b/c we had a stomach bug going around our house last week. I've cut it for a little over a week so I'll probably try it again at a lunch this week just to see if it really was the dairy and not something else.
I have the worst trouble the first week. Just coming up with meals is painful. I think we have cheese/dairy at least 3-4 nights a week. After I get in the habit of cooking differently, it gets a little easier...but I still miss pizza and queso/Mexican the most.
Thanks. I'm trying to focus right now on just figuring out if there is a problem. I also keep telling myself that I can always switch to formula if it is an allergy, but I BFed my other two for a year each so it breaks my heart to think about not doing the same with Cara.

DS is allergic to milk. Going dairy free stopped his weight loss and diarrhea. Also just as a heads up our allergist told us a certain percent of kids with a milk allergy also have a soy allergy.
I did it twice. Kate outgrew her allergy at 8 months old, but Ben still has his so I wound up weaning him to allergen formula at 10 months. For both kids, the main symptom was green slimy stinky poop. It went away when I cut out dairy for Ben in about a week, but for Kate I had to cut out soy, too, to really see a difference. Kate was also much further along in her painful allergy response than Ben (more blood in her poop, screaming all day. I caught Ben's early because I knew what to look for) and she stopped screaming all day within a week.
Some tips: Oreos and Haagen Daaz chocolate sorbet were my desserts of choice. Ghiradelli choc chips are dairy free! Kosher bakeries are good because stuff will be really well labeled. Bagels, french and italian breads are usually dairy free. Cook with olive oil instead of butter.
If I were you I would not go too crazy substituting soy for all the dairy (I did that with Kate, ate tons of Tofutti) until you know whether dairy is the issue bc a lot of kids have dairy and soy issues.
It gets easier. You just have to take some time to meal plan and shop so you have some tasty things to eat in the house and aren't confronted with a miserable array of food when you get hungry. Nuts, avocados, etc. Oh, and you will get SKINNY. I lost so much weight both times.
ETA: Yes, ALL of the dairy free cheese are disgusting. Better to go without. For me, rice milk was the best of the faux milks, and I tried them all (almond, oat, hemp, rice, soy, coconut). So Delicious brand coconut milk icecream is really good.
I think with ds the first thing I noticed was his stuffiness and dark circles under his eyes went away (about a week). Then the diaper rash got better and he stopped arching his back and crying after about 2 weeks. By 3 weeks I was pretty sure that dairy was the culprit and the rash was completely gone by about 5 weeks. Everytime I ate something with hidden dairy the rash came right back. I substitute a lot. A use fleishmanns unsalted margarine instead of butter and just make a lot of things. I use olive oil a lot on baked veggies and in pasta. Mayo doesn't have dairy so I make a lot of chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad etc and then eat regular salad with chicken and balsamic dressing. I like haggan daz chocolate sorbet and Oreos when I need a chocolate fix. Hope some of these ideas help

You're welcome! It tasted really good and authentic to me, but, then again, I haven't had real cream cheese in over 10 years.
I've been wanting to try almond milk, too, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I think Dande recommended it, but I could be wrong.
