Food sensitivity group??

Hi everyone!  I am hoping I can join you.  I found some great information on the breastfeeding board and i am so relieved that i think I finally figured out what is giving my LO mucus in her poop and the screaming fits.
Someone had posted that you have a group over here on food sensitivity?  I would love to join this group.  Does anyone have any websites to go to?  My daughter is milk/soy intolerant or allergic...and I just realized that their is hidden dairy and soy in everything!  I just don't know how to find out.  Is it as simple as looking for the word soy in ingredients.  Do you know what typically has soy.  I would love any help or support you could offer!  Thanks so much!

Re: Food sensitivity group??

  • It's usually just a check in on Fridays- sometimes webmistress, our fearless leader gets busy with her little guy and doesn't get it posted though. Wink

You're right though, soy and dairy are in freaking everything. This website has a list of hidden dairy and soy derivatives you need to look out for outside of things that say dairy and soy. Also, some people who are soy allergic won't be allergic to soybean oil and soy lecithin, so that is why you might see those products on an ingredients list, but not have soy listed as an allergen in the product. I'm able to eat both w/out any problem, but soy sauce or any other sort of soy protein is a no-no.

Eating out is the biggest challenge- I've found most places are really helpful though if you just explain the situation. Avoid all bread when out to eat- it inevitebly has dairy and probably soy in it. Also, a lot of places will put butter on veggies- ask if it's possible to have yours just steamed. Baked potatoes/sweet potatoes are usually my go-to side. You might want to bring along your own salad dressing, or just ask for oil and vinegar, and sans cheese on a salad. Mashed potatoes, obviously, are out.

As far as alternatives for products at home- if you can get away with soy lectithin, almond milk rocks. Rice milk is ok, and a lot of ladies on here swear by coconut milk, but I'm not a big coconut fan and can taste it, so I don't use it. The health food store/Whole Foods has become my new BFF. Gluten free products are often also dairy and soy free (but not always). The best advice is just to read every single label, and even have your DH read over them. Even still, it'll sneak into your pantry sometimes- I had found some rice milk ice cream a few weeks ago, and was snacking on it, until I happened to read through the ingredients while I was eating and out jumped some soy ingredient that I hadn't caught the first time. I was very sad- it was pretty good ice cream!

GL, and feel free to ask any ?'s you have over here!

  • Thank you sooo much!  That was really helpful.  I am going to start doing some research online today and hopefully that will help.  I didn't realize it was in bread...my poor LO...seriously she has had the WORST pure mucus poops since she was 2 weeks old.  When I cut out the milk products the green color went away, but the mucus is still there.  Now that i know soy is in everything I have been eating, no wonder.  Her poor tummy makes all the gurgling noises all the time and I can tell she is in  so much pain.  I am so grateful for the bump and all the knowledge that can be found with the mommas here!  Take care!
