Has anyone's DH had a vasectomy?

We have 3 children under the age of 4.  We are SO done.  LOL

DH goes on March 19th to have it done and I am wondering what to expect.  He took off the day after (he works Saturdays normally) and I plan to let him relax and keep the kids out of his hair as much as I can for a few days.  Anything I need to know?

He's being put under for the procedure because he is on blood thinners (Plavix and aspirin) for a previous heart attack and can't stop them as usually would be done.  The doctor seems fine with this but wants him asleep so he can get a really good cauterization (sp?) on the wound and eliminate (or at least reduce) problems with bleeding later.

Re: Has anyone's DH had a vasectomy?

  • Not really. DH had little real pain afterward, just some tenderness and a bit of stiffness down there for a few days as everything started to heal up. I think it was a lot easier than he feared!!

  • DH had it done on a Thursday, took off Fri/Sat/Sun. (He works for himself on weekends - electrician).  He was still kinda sore for about a week. He has to wear an athletic supporter or tighty whities for after the surgery, and DH wore the tighty whities for about 2 weeks.  My biggest advice is to make sure he goes back for the semen analysis.  DH had one done at 12 weeks post-op and still had a few swimmers. He needs to go back for another in the next week or so.  I know 3 couples who didn't do this, just stop using other protection after 6 weeks, and got pg.  One couple even divorced b/c the husband was sure the wife cheated....they had all the paternity testing done and he was the father, but were already in the process of divorcing and it was just not repairable at that point.  Not saying that would happen to you, but, get it checked so you don't end up with a surprise.
  • MH had it done.

He forgot to take the pre-op medication and he just felt some tugging.

He took nothing but Tylenol afterwards and only was sore for about a day.

He was up and moving the next day, but didn't go to the gym for a week.

  • Dave was back to normal activity within two days.  Really no problems at all, other than being allergic to the codeine (whoops).  Once we realized that was the problem and he stopped taking it, he was totally fine!

I guess I need to buy him a pack of tidy whities then... I hadn't read the paper work and he didn't mention it.  Thanks!  As for going back for the tests he definitely will.  They were very clear about that so he knows.  I can't believe someone would file for divorce without even calling the doctor and asking if it were possible.  Even if the swimmers are gone there is still a slim chance it can undo.  How about giving your wife the benefit of the doubt first?  She is probably better of without him!

  • My Dh had it done a week ago. Procedure was about thirty minutes long, and he felt no pain. He has been a bit sore, but nothing to really write home about. This says alot because my DH is known to be a bit of a baby when it comes to any sickness or injury... Ha ha. Good luck!
