s/o on the preschool underwear post...

In your opinion, when should you stop putting your DS in "graphic" underwear?  I'm not necessarily talking about character themed underwear (although I must admit my boys have some character underwear since I won't them have the characters on their clothes) but I am talking more about underwear with designs such as skulls or cars or fish or whatever (think Gymboree-type underwear).  Is there an age they should be in just "tighty-whities" or plain colored underwear?

To answer my own question, DS#1 is almost 5 and has some plain colored underwear but mostly still wears underwear with designs.  Not sure when I will stop buying these for him :)

  • My mother ADORES sending J underwear with stuff on them, so he'll wear them until he doesn't want to anymore.

I don't think there's an age for that.

  • It has never occurred to me that there might be a socially acceptable age limit for underwear with a print. I'll buy him whatever underwear he wants (within reason- no thongs for a 5 y/o, LOL) and can't imagine ever NOT letting him wear whatever undies he wants.

Does this apply to girls too? I mean, is there anyone who ever questions when girls need to move from printed to plain colored underwear? Because, um, I'm almost 33 and I have underwear with elephants, and Christmas trees, and flowers...

I was thinking more that there would be a point that DS wouldn't want the underwear with designs thinking it would be too "babyish" not that society would dictate he "shouldn't" wear it anymore, KWIM?  I am all for him deciding what he wears, but at this point he has ZERO interest in what he wears or what I buy him, so I wondered if there would be an age where he no longer wanted me to buy them.  I am a bargain shopper and tend to buy ahead a few years in sizes, so I was trying to decide if I should buy ahead in the underwear department too :)

  • Ah, gotcha.

I don't think my ds will outgrow wanting to wear underwear with skulls and crossbones for a long time, LOL. He might not be too thrilled with puppies and dinosaurs after a certain point, but I think the pirates are here to stay long-term. ;-)

  • not until matt says mom enough of the baby undies get me some cool black boxer briefs.  and that will be a sad sad day.   oh and when matt says it, sean will follow suit, no doubt.

  • My DS must be the only one with an opinion (he's 4 1/2).  He prefers boxer briefs to anything else.  No more characters.  But, he likes the gymboree type stufff - he has drums, football helmets, whatever.  Or solids, which look very grownup.

Im 26 and my undies still have designs on them.  :)  Dh is 31 and still has some boxers with designs/characters/prints on them.

I dont think there is an age.

  • I like cute underwear.  Why shouldn't they?  Besides, anything that keeps them from peeing in them works for me.  Almost all the girls' underwear is characters.  DD#2 just got Tinkerbell panties and Minnie panties since she is potty training.  She loves them.

That's what I was thinking...I am glad he doesn't want to pee on Lightening McQueen and it helps with PTing!  All of my kids undies are characters...and I ran out at Disney (didn't think about sweating and taking extra showers and able to do laundry) bought a 3 pack of Mickey Mouse for myself and they were my fav undies through pregnancy.

  • I don't think my son cares that much, though he tends to go for the Gymboree ones with trucks rather than Mickey Mouse.

And DS (age 3) has tight whities and they are stinking ADORABLE -- I think I like them better than the graphic ones!

  • At 7 years old, DS only wanted boxers.

  • Probably around 1st grade.  A friend told me about how her DS was teased a little at school for his graphic underwear and she went out and bought him plain undies after that.  So, when I need to buy DS the next size up, they will be plain.

  • Probably never.  My oldest DS is in his 20's and he still wears the kind with designs on them...boxers and boxer briefs.  His favorites are Calvin Klein boxer briefs (NO whites) with the button fly.  Yea...at $19 a pair!  He gets them for Christmas and birthday.  lol
