Re: SAHM---do you have a "schedule" that you follow?

  • I have a cleaning schedule and then I have J's school schedule (T TH 12-2).  The other times I leave open to schedule playdates and trips and such.

Some days, like today, I decide to stay home and lounge with the kids and only run one errand.  Other days, we are gone all day long and B naps in the car, between playdates, school and errands.

  • Our days are typically the same as far as timing goes.

    8-breakfast
    9-get ready for the day
10-nap 1 for Sydney (sometimes now because we're in between)
    12-lunch
    1-Target or Fred's
    2-park or walk around neighborhood
    3-nap 2 (sometimes)
    4-Oprah and dinner prep
5-clean up before H gets home
    6-dinner

  • Morning - get up, make tea, give her milk & empty the dishwasher (while waiting for the tea).  Then we lounge for a little while then have breakfast.

After breakfast we get dressed (8:30/9ish), make the beds and do various little things upstairs.  Like some days I run a swiffer around the bedrooms, another day I gather up the garbage up there, etc.   Then we go run errands or go to a playdate.  If we're staying home I usually start laundry at this point.

Lunch then her nap.  During her nap I do at least 1 load of laundry and any cleaning that I want to get done that day.  I do it as fast as possible because the rest of her naptime is ME time!

After her nap we have a snack and usually play together until we start dinner.

    Dinner, play, bath, bed.

  • We don't have a set schedule, but on an average/ideal day, it would look something like this:

    6:30-7am: wake up

7-8am: breakfast, K watches a show on Tivo, I clean out the dishwasher while E eats in the high chair

8-10am: girls play in play room while I go back & forth, playing with them, changing laundry around, cleaning up clutter, etc.

    10am: E takes a nap, I take a shower and get K & I dressed/ready

[mid-day varies: we might go out, run errands, have a play date, visit family, etc....if we're home, I try to get K to nap around 1 or 2pm and E takes another nap around 2pm as well, if I'm lucky]

    5 or 6pm: dinner

    6-7pm: play time, baths

    7pm: I put E to bed while DH & K have a snack

7:30pm: get K in jammies, brush her teeth, read stories & snuggle

    8:30ish: K in bed

  • My pregnant schedule is nowhere near as hard core as my non-pregnant schedule.  I give myself more breaks and I luckily was able to get cleaning people every other week.  They are my saviors.

M-T-Th we have music class 9:30 or preschool at 9:15

7:30am wake up, go potty, change in to big girl pants go downstairs for breakfast all by 8am.

8-8:20am both of us eat breakfast -- no TV (yes to TV on W & F)

8:20am get her dressed and on to my bed to watch a show while I shower (do this closer to 9am on W & F)

9:00 out the door (we have 15min cushion on Mondays)

During her nap I try and run an errand and relax OR if the morning was a disaster I make whatever I miss up (i.e. shower, breakfast).  When I was not pregnant I would be able to knock out many errands, now it's 1 or 2.

11:30am back home, start planning lunch, let DD play by herelf.

    12-12:45 Lunch for us both

12:45  Start nap process (includes getting her upstairs, potty and a story)

1:15-3pm Nap, I do a load of laundry (not everyday) pay bills, answer emails, read the nest.  I also try hard to to absolutely nothing for about an hour, sometimes if I am really dogging it I sleep about 30 min

3pm-5pm More play (cannot wait until we can go outside again!)

5pm I let her watch a show, sometimes 2, while I start dinner

6pm Eat, hopefully DH comes home at some point, DD plays after dinner

7pm Bath and Bed (hopefully out at 8pm, asleep usually by 8:30pm)

While I have taken away my own house chores I still clean my kitchen after all meals.  I find that potty training has also added a huge time suck to the day.  I feel like we operate in slow motion a lot but I keep thinking we're going to need to slow down considerably when DD#2 shows up, might as well start now and take decent care of myself. I think I've mentioned that this pregnancy I was diagnosed with perinatal anxiety/depression (same as post partum but during), so that has greatly impacted my ability to do my job.  I have spent a lot of time being pissed at my reduced/uncontrolable state but I have slowly started to accept it.  I need lots of help too. My mom gets me through the day often but we follow this same schedule.  I am having a really good today in the fact that I can actually type this post.

I cannot even believe that a year ago my condo was on the market and I was cleaning it perfectly for showings 3 or so times a week and making it to yoga 2x a week.  All while cooking new recipes, hosting/attending regular moms groups and doing all the chores!

  • Monday: free play in early am, coloring, play dough, baking, maybe a craft.   When the weather is nice a walk in the neighborhood, playing on the deck.  11:30 am-12:15 DD #1 has ballet.  Come home and have lunch, nap for DD #1, play downstairs with DD #2, nap for DD #2.  When DD #1 wakes up we read books, go to the library, or take a walk until I start getting ready for dinner.

Tuesday: DD #1 has preschool from 9 to 11.  After we go to the playground, the library, or home to play and then lunch.  Nap.  After nap is the same as Monday.

Wednesday: Open gym from 9 to 10.  Then we go to a local market, or sometimes have some food at a local diner.  We might occasionally shop for something.  Home and lunch then nap.  Afternoon like Monday.

Thursday: DD #1 has preschool from 9 to 11.  The rest of the day like Tuesday.

Friday: Music class at 10.  We usually go to a local grocery before the class that has kid shopping carts and a pony ride and free suckers.  After music we play on the playground.  Home for lunch and nap.  Afternoon playdate.

I shop for groceries on Sunday while DH watches the girls.  I also meal plan and look for coupons on Sunday.  I don't like doing real grocery shopping with the girls because it takes too long.  Every night after dinner I make sure I run the dishwasher and every morning I unload it.  I sweep the kitchen multiple times a day.  I vacuum the dining room every night after dinner.  Every night I run one load of laundry through and fold up one load a night.  This helps me keep up with it without being too much every night.  I sort the laundry folded from the previous night throughout the day.

We have a cleaning person every two weeks, so other than also picking up all day long I don't really do much heavy duty cleaning.

  • 6:45 AM - I get up and shower  and dress (unless I am going to the gym, then I get up at 7 and skip the shower)

7:30 - DS gets up (thank you Tot Clock!)

8:00 - breakfast, get DS dressed

8:30 - leave for morning activity (Monday - Burn class at the gym followed by park/library, Tuesday usually a museum or MOMS Club Activity, Friday My Gym class and playdate)

    12:00  - Lunch

1/1:30 - Nap/rest time. During his nap I shower (if I went to the gym that morning). vacuum, straighten up and prep dinner if need be.

3/3:30 - 5:30 - afternoon activity. Playgroup some days. Occassional errands. Park. Some days we stay in.

5:30 - DS watches a show while I finish dinner

6/6:15 - dinner for me and DS

After dinner we do bath, jammies, play for a bit, read books and DS is in bed by 7:30.

After he goes to bed I straighten up and do a load of laundry. DH gets home at 8:30 or so.

Wednesdays and Thursdays Henry goes to daycare. Those days I go to the gym, have any appointments I need, do major cleanings (bathrooms, etc), run errands, etc.

We do grocery delivery so I meal plan and order on Sunday and have it delivered on Monday.

This is pretty much our routine with DD (almost 4) and DS 10 mos.  DD also goes to school MWF from 9-1:30. I work on Tues for about 5 hours, but DH tries to keep the routine the same.

I got rid of the cleaning lady to save some money, but one thing I learned from having one every other week for a short while is that you really don't need to deep clean your house every week. Every other Sat. DH takes the kids to breakfast and the library for a few hours and I clean as much as I can as fast as I can. In between I sweep every day a million times a day, I mop the kitchen floor 1 or 2 times a week, and I clean the kitchen sink and th main floor bathroom sink 1-2 x a week, too. (On the Saturdays he doesn't take the kids out I go get a pedicure. I consider this fair payment.
