Almost 33 weeks and baby is SMALL!

I just stumbled upon this board and I'm wondering if any of you are in the same situation.I have been on bedrest for a month due to high blood pressure. At my last growth sonogram the baby measured 2.8lbs and was in the 17th percentile of weight. If she has not grown any or has dropped below the 10th percentile on March 24th (my next sonogram) they will take her out. I will be 35 weeks at that point. Anyone have any experience with this? TIA.

  • It sounds like you're headed for IUGR, which can result from BP issues.  I had this with Seth.  I'd been on bedrest from 16w on, due to placental abruption and BP, and his IUGR was diagnosed about 33w.  I ended up in the hospital, but held on until 37w.  He was born healthy at 5 lb 3 oz.  He is still only in the 5-10% on all his measurements, but he is super healthy and developmentally on track.

The good news is that you've caught this early, so now they can watch, and make sure your placenta continues to function wll enough for baby.  I know it can be scary, but it sounds like you're going to be being watched well.

    Good luck!

  • My baby was slightly larger than that, but not by much at that point.  I don't remember exactly what he was then, but at birth he was 5lbs 3 oz.  My OB was awful and didn't catch that he was that tiny, though the u/s tech commented on it.  We delivered at 38 weeks via emergency c/s for other reasons.  It was then that the OB realized that it was IUGR.

He was perfectly healthy and still is, just smaller.  He is still very small for his age but catching up more and more everyday.  Finally into 0-3 month clothes!

Don't be discouraged.  Knowing now is good so that they can keep an eye on it.  Sounds like they are doing everything they can for the baby.  Just have some Preemie clothes ready!  My H and I are not small people so we were surprised and had to send out the grandparents for anything that he wasn't swimming in!

Good luck, and all my friends thought my itty bitty (as they called him) was just too sweet to hold.  It is amazing to see something so small and so sweet.

  • At 32 weeks my LO was also really small.  I cant remember the numbers, but I think well under the 20th percentile.  Basically they told me to keep eating and come back in 2 weeks.  Everytime I have gone back she has gotten bigger adn bigger; and is now in the 35th percentile or so.  My perinatalogist said the same thing - under 10% or above 90% are issues....

This last appt the baby was 5lbs 5 ounces and I could have cried wit joy - it just sounds like such a big healthy baby weight to me!  I was so excited!

Its tough bc I felt like I was already eating so much, and trying my hardest to be healthy.  I don't want to have an unusually small baby, I was a teary mess.

Just keep eating protein and good luck!  Now that the issue is being monitored your drs will keep you informed and will surely do wha'ts best for the baby!!

  • at 30 weeks my twins were measuring small and my peri suspected problems with the placenta not functioning optimally. since then i've gone it for weekly doppler scans where they measure the blood flow in the babies' umbilical chords and in their brains. they also have a look at the placenta to be sure it's not deteriorating.

my dopplers are usually good unless the tech rushes through the u/s and/or the babies are super active. i didn't realize this until later but when the u/s tech speeds through the u/s, that's when my peri comes in looking serious and talking about the potential for hospital bed rest and maybe taking the babies out early. but when we get a tech that takes her time and keeps trying to get a good measurement on a moving target, the peri says everything looks great.

sorry this is so long but it makes me mad that there can be so much variability based on who does your u/s. make sure your u/s tech takes their time with your scan especially if you lo isn't exactly cooperating. those measurements/weights mean the world to us but sometimes i feel like the techs are just trying to get in and get out and on to the next folder.

  • I know how you feel.  I was diagnosed with IUGR at 20 weeks and have been on bedrest since then.  She was doing well but today at 34 weeks she was in the 11th percentile but was told as long as she continued to pass her BPP and movement was good we'd continue to hang on.  But I'm in the same boat as you, if in two weeks she has dropped to 10 or below I'll have a baby. I'll be 36 weeks then.  So I know how you are feeling.  Hang in there!
