Leaving LO overnight for the first time and a question

Tomorrow DH and I are leaving to go out of town for one night with a group of other couples for our friend's 30th birthday.  I am excited and sad to leave at the same time.  Have not been away from Ry overnight yet.  Luckily my parents are driving the 2 hours to come visit and stay at our house to take care of Ryleigh and our boxer Boomer.  My parents are great with her so no worries there but I find myself writing out a schedule and listing all these tips etc.  I am sure my mom will laugh at my directions for working the humidifie (how hard can it be?!).  I will have all the breast milk bottles made up and have formula on hand just in case.

On another note, as we will not be driving, will not be coming home to take care of Ry at the end of the night, and will not have to (for the evening) worry about alcohol and breast milk....I am planning on letting loose!  Yeah!

Which brings up a question, how long after a night of drinking do I need to "pump and dump"?

Re: Leaving LO overnight for the first time and a question

  • I know some people say you have to pump and dump but my breastfeeding teacher told us as long as you're not pumping until 4 hours after drinking it should be fine. I only did it once but she was just fine.  Have fun.

  • Just a comment on the LO's schedule and tips...  I'll be watching my sister's LO soon and I'm hoping she does this for me!  I have lots of experience with LO's and babysitting but I'd rather have too much info than not enough.  So please don't feel bad for doing this.  Besides when babysitting, the parents always left a daily schedule for reference.  Also not every baby likes to be soothed the same way.  My cousin was visiting my sister and wanted to do the feeding, etc.  The baby didn't like the way she was being held and was fussy.  My cousin just assumed that LO wasn't hungry which wasn't the case at all.

    Good luck and have fun!

Hmm---I wonder if this applies to just like a couple drinks or all night drinking as well??!  Of course I am talking big---I will probably be done after 3 drinks!  Its been a while.

My friend (she has a 3 year old and a 1 month old) thinks you have to pump and dump for 24 full hours.  That is wasting a lot of milk!

  • Good Luck leaving LO overnight!  I did it for the forst time last month and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

In regards to "pump and dump" breastmilk is like your blood.  If there is still alcohol in your blood it is still in your breastmilk.  There is no need to pump and dump if LO is not eating or if you are not uncomfortable.

I EP'd so if it was my time to pump and I had been drinking then it was dumped. Otherwise, if I felt like the alcohol was out of my system then I would continue as normal.
