Poll: What shade of purple?

I am considering coloring my hair.  Just a few pieces here and there, nothing too obnoxious - but I want a shade of purple.

  • Wow, I don't really know.  But I just want to say I'm constantly amazed at your confidence with your style.  In your blog, I always like the clothes, but never think I'm confident enough to pull it off.  I feel like everyone will be looking at me.

  • Are you doing it yourself?  Are you going to put it straight over your current hair color or are you going to prelighten the peices before you put the purple on?

  • I think the light lavendar may look too much like grandma hair - I chose the dark, but I am thinking a medium dark.

Ehrm... hadn't really thought about that. LOL.

What is your rec, since you're the resident hair guru?  I have VERY curly, fine hair, but I have A LOT of it.

  • OMG!!!  Do it!!!!!!!

  • Dark purple! Maybe not black-purple, but dark enough that it isn't lavender. The only lavender hair I've seen looks baaaaaad.

A grape-candy color would look awesome.

I'm also interested in banc's advice. My pink is fading at the roots, and I'm considering a permanent route.

  • I like when people with dark hair have the dark purple you only see when the light shines on it.  Its different without being too out there.

If you put it straight over your current color light to medium (like lavender or lilac) purple isn't really going to show up much.  So if you don't want to bleach anything I would go for dark and rich.  If you want bolder/brighter color then prelightening the sections is the way to go.  Also I wouldn't do thin streaks (like highlights).  You need thicker bolder sections to make this look work, and they should be mostly under the top layer of hair at the crown, unless you want it really out there.

Of course I always suggest you leave it to a pro, especially since this is not your run of the mill thing.  Let me see if I can find some pictures.

btw, I have panels of dark rich red/violet in my hair.  They looking pretty tame inside (see siggy) in the sun they are blaring!

  • I vote for the dark purple.  It would make a bolder statement.  I wish I were you right now.  I've had my hair all types of colors over the years, but cannot do it now working in the corporate sector.  Be sure to post pics afterward.

I wish I lived near you.  I'd totally trust you to do it, but I don't know of many salons around here who I feel comfortable trusting blindly.
  • I know this girls hair is super light but I love the placement of her color.

And her hair is super dark but you get the idea

Here is light purple.  I don't care for it.

This is what you DON"T want it to look like.  I hate this.

  • Bev - LOVE the second link!
Not sure what direction we are headed. Either way, I am up for the ride.
  • Since I still work in a semi-professional (read either scrubs or bus. cas.) enbvironment, they'd have to be a bit more subtle than I'd like.  I think I like the first pic best, but it's hard to tell if that would work with curly hair that doesn't always part in the same place, and sometimes doesn't part at ALL.
