Although I haven't work in this area (very urban) very long, I thought I've seen/heard it all. 

Nope, on my last day of work before leave I saw a girl who got hit in the eye at home has a terrible sceral hemorrhage. (white part of eye BRIGHT RED and swollen)  She was able to see a little but she couldn't see well.

Mom sent her to school and was surprised when we called to have her daughter picked up to be taking to he doctor. 

::head desk bang repeatedly::

I *maybe* see not realizing something was wrong if you couldn't see the injury, but a bright red, swollen eye would be pretty serious and hard to miss!
