I thought things were supposed to get easier once they are 3.5 yrs old

If anything its getting worst....the sass, the defiance, the screaming in rage, and good lord the back talk and absolute refusal to do what she is told to do.

Thursday nights I let her stay up until dh gets home from drill....I usually let her play until 8 & then get her jammies on & bring her into my bed.

Well she refused to pick up her toys....jsut stood there screaming "I dont have to"  I finally told her if she wanted to stay up and wait for daddy she needs to stop screaming & pick up her toys.  She continued screaming so I told her she's going to bed & to get her clothes off.  Nope....stood there screaming "I dont want to...I wanna stay up"  I did this a few times and finally told her if she wanted her nightly milk that she had to get her clothes off.  Nope same thing.

So I just quickly put on her jammies and put her to bed.  She screamed bloody murder for 20 minutes before finally quieting down.

This is getting ridiculous and its not just at bedtime either.   Thanks for letting me vent.

  • 3.5 to 4 has been painful for us.  I have a hard time knowing how much of it is her jealousy over now mobile brother and how much is Contrary Defiance, our little b!tch of a friend who comes to visit and takes over my sweet, kind DD's body.

  • Sorry Kris.  Good for you for sticking to your guns and putting her to bed.  Hopefully, she will learn that screaming will NOT get her anywhere.

  • That's about the age where I saw a turn in dd and she has been a great 4 year old so...... maybe soon??  She's 3.5, maybe soon.  Hugs!
  • I feel your pain.  3.5 was he!! on earth here at our house.  It lasted much further into 4 that I would have expected.  Now at 5, I would say the majority of the time she's fine but when she gets into a mood- still have to watch out!
  • Nope I heard 3.5 to 4 was the worst!
  • It's the whining more than anything else that just grates on my nerves!
  • You just described a common evening occurance at our house.

  • Don't you have older kids in the house?  Maybe she is learning from them (not the screaming or even the backtalk).   She might see them being able to do things and "get their way" and she thinks she should too.  I think it is much easier when you don't have a much older one they can mimick or following...because obviously the older one can do MUCH more than a 3 year old can.  Maybe she is frustrated she doesn't get to do these things.
