DS will be a month short of turning two when the new baby is born and I am wondering when a good time to switch to his big boy bed would be. We are still deciding if we want to do a toddler bet or just go to a twin size, but either way I'd like to do it before the new baby is born so he can get used to the idea. What do you ladies suggest? TIA
Re: When to switch to "big boy bed"?
DS will be about 23 months when this baby is born too. He was not showing any signs of trying to climb out of the crib and sleeps really well at night and I was just not interested in messing with his sleep shortly before introducing a new baby, which will be a big adjustment for him. Our crib was not covertible so we ended up buying him a new convertible crib and keeping the original crib in the nursery. That way if in a few months, he is ready for a big boy bed, we'll just convert the crib.
I think some kids are ready before or around 2 for a new bed, but some aren't. I am pretty sure naps would be over if DS was in a toddler bed right now. I would err on the side of being cautious and not forcing your son into something he might not be ready for.

DS's crib it convertable. It's the one we bought before he was born. We're borrowing a crib from a friend right now for DD. I have no intentions of putting DS in a "Big Boy" bed until he's night training to use the toilet. It doesn't bother me, even if he's three...and he doesn't know the difference, so...
This way, he doesn't bother us in the morning while I feed DD and he doesn't get out of bed in the night when DD wakes up. It also keeps him contained if he doesn't feel like napping and just gets quiet time instead.
We also have already transitioned DS to a big boy bed. It is a twin with bumpers. He loves it, but the transition took a couple days. I wanted him to be used to the new bed before #2 came. I thought that would be too much change and I didn't want him to get upset at the idea of his new brother taking his bed. I am probably reading too much into it, but whatever.
He actually sleeps a little better in the new bed, although he is still not sleeping through the night. I can't wait for that day!
We put DS1 into his toddler bed at about 17m. He did great...never looked back. I mean, seriously smooth transition -- he never once has gotten out of bed in the middle of the night.
When we found out this past Dec that baby #3 was a girl, and that the kiddos would be in different rooms, we moved DS into his "big boy" room and into a full bed, and he did just as great.
Good luck.
