Anyone's DC ever get a BAD haircut?

We took DS in a few days ago to get his haircut. As you can see in my sig he has (had) beautiful curls. Well, the lady not only cut off all the curls, but she cut the back much shorter than the front and sides. Kind of a Kate Gosselin type 'do. It was awful. So when we got home, and I really got a good look (they were rushing us out the door because they were busy...my fault for not being more meticulous about it I guess) I called and told her I wasn't happy. She said she would fix it no problem. So, DH took him back yesterday, and she "corrected" it. It's even worse!!! She cut ALOT more off the sides and top, but didn't touch the back, so now it has this mullet thing going on. And where she cut around his ears is really jagged and uneven.

WWYD? I don't want her cutting his hair again. I could take him to another place, but I hate to shell out the money to fix someone else's mistake. I can't even call and complain to her boss, because she owns this particular salon.

DH said to give it a week or so to let it start growing back, and it won't look so jagged. I have no idea since we've pretty much always kept his hair longer.

I know I'm making a bigger deal of it than I should be, but I'm p!ssed!

  • Are you sure its not just the shock of him having a big boy hair cut? That happens a lot.

  • My DS's hair grows incredibly fast, so if we don't get it cut every six weeks, it looks like he has permanent bedhead. I don't really like putting hair products in his hair, so we just get it cut every 6-8 weeks. Unfortunately, since I'm a cheap bastard, I refuse to go to the kiddie hair salons for him, and he ends up with a bad haircut usually every third time or so. It sucks, but it really does look normal again within a week or two.

I don't blame you for being a little upset -- your DS's curls are gorgeous! I'm always a little ticked when his hair gets screwed up, but I feel better after a week or so.

This too. DS always seems to age a full year every time his hair gets cut. It makes me a little sad.

  • DS#1 had beautiful hair and it was all wavy at the back but he insisted on getting it cut very short like DS#2. I tried to put him off because his hair was fab but no joy. I brought him to a barbers and he cut it short. He did a good job but I hated it and I've been letting it grow out now for nearly 6 months!!! Its only now starting to look normal again.

I couldn't complain to the barbers because he did nothing wrong, I just hated the short haircut.

In your situation, I would probably cut it / shave it pretty tight and let it all grow out again (If you're as determined as me to get the long lock look!) But it can take a looong time and the in-between stage looked AWFUL!!!

I'm not sure wether I'd take him back to the same place though. I'd probably go elsewhere and pay the money that I couldn't afford Sad

  • This happened to us two weeks ago. DS had really cute, shaggy long hair. I wanted to get it trimmed a little before his birthday though. So she cut the back quite a bit and then pretty much just left the front and sides like they were. It was not good. He went to my mom's house right after that, so I didn't really get the full effect for a few days, but DS suspiciously came home with a new hat that she had bought him! Ha ha! For real, he mostly wore hats for a week or so, then I trimmed it up as well as I could. I am trying to get it to grow out a bit more before I take him in for a professional cut again, but until then, I am just trimming the big chunky parts myself.

  • Last summer I got ds hair cut really short. It was ok but I really didn't like the cut. It took forever to grow out and I hated it! Never again! I think you just have to be very specific with a stylist and try another stylist when it grows out. I mean if someone else tries to "fix" it they are going to have to cut more...do you think you would be happy if it was even shorter? I would just try to even out the back and make sure he gets his vitamins :).

This too...Part of the reason why I hated his hair. He looked about 6 or 7 after he got it done!! And I swear he got cheekier......

  • Ds got a bad haircut last spring. I could have taken him back to get it fixed but thought that seemed like a bad idea- if the hair stylist butchered his hair so badly in the first place I had zero confidence in her ability to fix it to my liking. I ended up taking him somewhere different and paying for them to cut it again.

I learned my lesson- I had taken ds to a cheap chain for a fast, inexpensive haircut because I wanted to save a bit of money. Never again. It wasn't worth it just to save $10, LOL. We sheepishly went back to our regular stylist and let her fix it.

Yeah, this is probably part of it...especially after she cut so much more off the front.

Its the part around his ears, and the back that really bother me though. It looks like he has an octagon around his ears...like you can see every individual cut she made. And then the back seems too long compared to the sides. The front looks good though, thank goodness.

But you're probably right. I'm just so used to seeing him with a huge curly mane, and not a structured cut. And it does make him look alot older :(

Thanks, ladies. You're making me feel better about it.

Every haircut DS has ever gotten has been awful. But I am the only one who thinks so. I cried after his first one because it made him look so old. Now I just trim it myself and just cut off a little bit at a time. When I take him anywhere they cut off way too much and it makes him look too old for my taste. Give it a few weeks and I bet it looks better. I am sure I would be traumatized at losing those curls too! He has great hair :-)?
  • oooh, i feel your pain!  we had a similar thing happen - only I couldn't complain since the stylist is his godmother, my DH's sister and she came to the house and did it for free.  She owns a salon and does a great job with my hair - she is very trendy, can always do the latest cuts, etc, so I am not sure what happened with my DS, but I almost cried when she cut off all his curls.  I specifically told her to clean up his mullet, and trim his bangs, but leave it longer on the top and sides.  She scalped him - and it was right before the holidays.  I had to remind myself there were so many people with so many bigger issues, but it was hard.

Now that his hair is growing back, I've been doing little trims myself.  At some point we are going to need professional intervention and it would be WW3 in the family if I went elsewhere so I have been cutting magazine pictures to show her exactly what i want. There are great boys hair styles in Crewcuts catalogues. (J Crew kids' line).

    good luck!

  • Well, if it makes you feel better, when Jackson was with my in laws, my MIL bribed him with a lollipop and had my FIL "trim" his bangs.

The problem w/ this is that we've been working on this sort of hairstyle for him:

And now he has bangs straight across.  Looking like this, but longer in the back and sides:

Trust me, I love the Beatles.  Like LOVE.  But their hair is not something I think is cute on my son.

  • Sorry, I just snorted out loud eclaires. Oh my.

  • xti, every day I look at it and I'm torn between laughing and crying.

He totally ratted her out though - I noticed immediately and was like, "Jackson who cut your hair?"  And he said his grandma did and she gave him a blue lollipop.

I'm just hoping his bangs grow out soon enough...ugh.  His hair does grow pretty fast, though.

  • Yes, DS has probably gotten 1 good haircut.  I think it's hard for me, as a woman, to explain what I want done with his hair.  But, when I have DH take him, it's worse b/c he doesn't tell the hairdresser anything.  It's very frustrating! I think the next stop is a place that just cuts kid's hair and hopefully they can get it right.

I would NOT make that assumption.  At least not in my area.  The stylists at the kid's salons near me are the absolute worst.
