Midwife question

I wanted to do a birthing center but because of insurance I have to go to a hospital. Anyway, I would still like to see a Midwife and hopefully have her deliver. Any suggestions on where I can find one that will deliver me in a hospital? Would it be rude and insulting to ask my dr if she can help me find someone else to deliver my baby? (not in those words but essentially that's what I would be doing)

Re: Midwife question

  • Does your health care have a network?  I'd start there.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

  • Also check with the hospital you are delivering at. My hospital has a midwife practice they offer.
  • I would switch to a practice with midwives and express a preference to see one of the midwives. They will probably have you rotate to get to know everyone, and you'll want to meet the OBs in case you need an emergency c-section, but if you express a preference for one of the midwives then more than likely they will try to accommodate and be there for your birth. I spoke with my midwife, and even if she can't be there, she said that everyone in the practice will know that my preference is to go natural and that I've done my homework, etc., and will be supportive of that.

Perhaps look on your local Bump board and see if you can get some suggestions for midwives or practices with midwives? I found mine through referrals from friends.

  • Check with your hospital - they will know which MWs have privileges.

  • I found mine through my practice. I would ask your Dr and hospital.
