2nd Trimester

Nervous... putting in notice tomorrow at work

So tomorrow I am putting in my notice that I will not be returning to work after the baby comes. I feel nervous and kind of bad about it (even though I know I shouldn't), just because I know I'm putting my company / team in a tough spot. Because of recent acquisitions and things, they've had two people from our team leave or retire in the last year, and corporate hasn't let them hire anyone to replace. I know my position will probably be the same way - my boss won't be able to fill it. I really hate to do it, but it's always been my plan to SAH when the baby came.

I'm giving them 2 months notice. I wouldn't give quite so much notice (just because I imagine it's awkward working a notice, and there would be too much time for them to try and squeeze in some last-minute projects), but I have my annual review coming up next week, and my boss is about to spend a lot of money to train me and another coworker in a new strategy for our group.... which would be wasted on me. I'd rather someone else have that opportunity. Also I worry that my team will plan a baby shower - don't really want them to do that, since I won't be coming back.

So anyway, prayers are appreciated for my composure and confidence while telling my boss I won't be coming back. :) I know this shouldn't be a big deal, but I tend to get emotional when I'm nervous anyway, and with the mood swings these days, I just really hope I don't wind up sobbing in his office or something humiliating like that. I've never resigned from a job like this before, and it's a little weird for me.

Anyone have any GOOD resignation stories you could share? :) Or advice on things to remember? I'm going to tell my boss and probably my team tomorrow; I'll write a formal letter for my boss and for HR later this week.

Re: Nervous... putting in notice tomorrow at work

  • I had planned to give 2-3 months notice as well, but something happened that made sense for me to give it even earlier. I was totally nervous, but it turned out my team was REALLY glad I told them that early so they could start figuring out how to reallocate my workload. It hasn't been awkward at all since then, either. Well, I've been a little less than motivated, but that's my problem, not theirs. :)

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for sharing, I feel ya. I'm considering doing this as well even though I have a long way to go. I was wondering what would be the best option-- I do want to give my (very small) organization time to look for a replacement and get things in order-- but I don't want to put myself in an awkward situation for the next 5 months. Would they have any right to let me go if I tell them now that I don't plan to come back in August? We have 3 international conferences in October and I'm thinking they would want the person planning the conferences to be the one who actually attends them (which I won't be). I have no idea what to do...

Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes :)

  • Good luck! I have no stories. I'm one of many reps in a call center, so I think I'm going to go on leave and then tell them I'm not coming back. it's not like they'll need to find an immediate replacement.
