How much did/will you spend on nursery furniture

Ignoring cutesy shelves, etc., what will you spend on your primary furniture, such as bed/changing table/dresser?  If you are reusing from your 1st preg., try to put that amnt instead of $0.  Thanks!

  • We'll be using furniture from SIL that's three years old. Still meets all the safety requirements and no recalls.

  • I put $600-$800 for our crib and changing table/dresser. We also have a PBK rocking chair and that was $700 by itself but MIL bought it so I didn't count it in our total.
  • I am using 2 pieces of furniture from when DH was young... we are only buying a crib that matches (stain wise) to the natural wood colour of DH's childhood furniture! It's nice, simple and REAL wood which is hard to come by these days unless you want to spend a lot of money.
  • I bought our crib, changing table/dresser and the girl threw in a glider and bedding for $250!  No recalls or anything on them!
  • $600-800

We're only buying a changing table/dresser combo and a bookshelf-- my cousin is lending us her crib (I think it was around $700) and her PB rocking chair (around $700).  Lucky us!

  • I answered more than 2K, but I did not buy traditional "baby" furntiture.

I bought an armoire, a 6 drawer double dresser, a 5 drawer tall men's chest, a nightstand, and a crib that converts.

The place I got also sells a queen bed in teh same finish, so the plan is to pass the crib to child 2 and to put kid 1 in a queen when they are around 6 or 7.   (we have a full bed in our current guest room that we will use from when into big kid bed until queen is ok).

It is one of the few purchases taht matters to me.   I only buy top of the line wood furniture... but then again, I would not buy a changing table (waste)  and the crib can get destroyed from chewing, but my kid will not be in their room out of crib to ruin anything else during the toddler years, so not really concerned with people who say they will draw and ruin the armoire, etc.

This is what my parents did with me and I have the furniture they purchased still today (gorgeous sleigh bed, armoire, tall dresser, and 6 drawer and nightstand).  It is in a timeless style and it is nicer than most things that are out today.

This is personal though and everyone has their own opinions on this.

I voted >2K as the crib that is currently the number one contender is well over $1400 alone.

  • The only piece of furniture we paid for was our armoire, which was $1500.  I justify it in the following ways:  it is an extremely nice, well-made piece of furniture (Stanley Young America, white beadboard) and if DD doesn't use it forever, it will easily blend with the decor in the other rooms of our house, which is cottage/beachy.  My ILs bought our crib, which matches the armoire, my parents bought our glider and ottoman, and we are using DH's changing table from when he was a baby.

  • I put $200-$400 because we are only getting a crib and it came up to $389 with tax and all but my mom wrote us a check for $400 about a month ago for the crib, so I guess we are in the black $11.  We are not getting a dresser right now and are using a table we have as a changing table.

  • We are getting a Million Dollar Baby crib for about $375, a collapsible changing table from IKEA, and using existing dressers, etc., for the rest.  We are in a crowded apartment right now, though, so when we move we will probably buy a new dresser and changing table.  I personally don't think it is worth it to spend $1000+ on a crib, and would rather wait to spend that on a single bed with matching bedroom set when the little one is out of the crib.  Of course, everybody thinks differently about these things, and there is no one right answer!

BTW, we are also seriously considering foregoing the expensive coordinating baby bedding and getting mix-and-match separates from IKEA.  They are all cotton, inexpensive, and in bright, fun, brain-stimulating and (mostly) gender-neutral styles.

  • All we bought for DS was the crib which we got at ikea for $100.  This one will be using that crib (we'll be buying a toddler bed sometime soon) and I just bought a matching bookshelf and plan on buying the matching dresser sometime before he is born.  The total for those two things will only be a little over $100 (gotta love Ikea!).
