RDQ: How did you decide on a good fit for crib mattress?

I know from reading my trusty Baby Bargains that a perfect fit is needed. How did you make sure you got the right fit? Measure once assembled? Go with the mattress the seller recommended?

I just ordered the Olivia set from JCP, and there is one mattress linked, but nothing promising it's the right size and I'm not sure how to know. The sizes listed with external measurements, I'd assume (to make sure the furniture fits in the room).

Ok... well I thought it was one size fits all type of deal.  A twin is a twin, a queen is a queen and a crib mattress is a crib mattress!  Oh well, if that's not true when I get the crib, I'll have some exchanging to do!

Why don't you look at the instruction manual for the crib? I bet it has measurements in there somewhere.

I got one free with our crib.  If it's no good when it comes then I guess I'll cross that bridge

crib mattresses are standardized.  As long as you get a crib mattress to fit your particular type of crib (ie fully size, travel, round) you'll be fine.

I've read some product reviews and in BB that the gap can't be over a certain size. I thought it was all standard, which is why I was fretting. I'll just get a standard one and see how it goes, I guess!

Yes to some of the PP's - most cribs say they will fit a "standard" crib mattress, but double check the cribs measurements and the mattress measurements and you should be fine.

Our crib has a giant sticker on it that states the right size for the crib. But it turns out that the size it has on it, is the size of most if not all crib mattresses. I was really worried about it too, and wouldn't register for it until I could measure, then I saw the sticker, went online and then I felt kinda dumb, LOL
