Tell me more about cloth diapering

How does it all work?

Do you change a new cloth diaper every time...so if Lilly has 12 diaper changes a day, do I now have 12 diapers to wash?  That seems like a lot washing...

Is there an insert you take out and replace each diaper change?

Is getting started with cloth diapers expensive?  What is your favorite cloth diaper? (bum genius AIO is what I have my eye on right now...)

How many would I need to start?

do cloth diapers come with the diaper covers?

Do cloth diapers interfere with clothing sizes...meaning, Lilly is in 3 months...if she is in cloth diapers, will the 3 months be too snug on her bum?

How do you clean them?

This is a great resource, plus you are also able to do a trial for $10.

  • I found cloth diapering to be a lot easier than I anticipated and not at all intimidating. Depending on the type of diaper you choose, putting one on is as easy as a disposable.

We wash diapers about every 2-3 days, not after each diaper is taken off. We have about 24 or so diapers, which with about 8 changes a day is just right.

We have the Bum Genius diapers, which is a cover and insert in one, but you wash & dispose of both together -- you don't re-use the cover the whole day long.

We found that using diaper liners and a sprayer has made cloth diapering very easy -- the liner most of the time contains the poo, so we lift off the diaper and flush. If anything is left over afterward, that's when the diaper sprayer comes in really handy.

Washing is easy: you do a rinse, then a wash, and then dry. Nothing really special there.

Clothing size, I've only seen an impact in pant size. Cloth diapers are usually more padded, so it makes their bootie go up a size.

If you're thinkign about it, but don't know if it's right for you, or which ones to choose, try the Jillian's Drawers trial program. It's inexpensive and great!

  • I use a service.  Tiny Tots in Campbell.  (there's lots of good info on their site) You have to buy covers (but they give you a discount when you first order) I went with a simple cover and paid 7.50 a piece.  I also bought snapis to hold the diaper together (and those were 6.50 for a 3 pack).  I place my order, clean diapers are delivered, the next week, I put my dirty ones out on the porch and clean ones replace them.

I put on the cloth, secure with a snapi, and put the cover on.  It's super easy.

Is there any way to choose which cloth diapers we want to try out with that trial (I couldn't find that anywhere)...I know that we would be much more inclined to use AIO's...the snappies and all that are too much for us.

  • For the trial you get like a "variety" pack - you do not get to pick what you get but you do get a mix including aio's.  I think the trial does come with a prefold (the kind that uses a snappi) but you wouldn't have to use it.

I'm not sure, but the trial has 2 or so of each type of diaper. They have wonderful customer care service though, so I'm sure if you call and talk to them and tell them styles of diapers you will NOT be interested in, they'll work with you -- certainly worth a call.

we use tiny tots service also. So easy. Diaper fairy picks up our dirties while we are at work and leaves clean ones. Our daycare was cool with it, I have a bag she drops the dirties in that I pick up with his diaper bag each day. I do find sk e clothes a bit more snug but our guy is tiny so it helps keeps them on :)

I'm planning to go a similar route. prefold diapers, snappis and covers but washing at home. We also have about 15 Bumgenius pocket diapers that we might use for when we go out...or for when daddy is on kid duty. We use the Bumgenius with Grey and loved them.

I haven't used any AIOs, the only negative I have heard about them is that they take longer to dry than a pocket diaper with an insert.

Just be careful how you define AIOs. I did NOT like the Bum Genius AIO for the reasons Kelly mentioned -- they took forever to dry. The regular BG3.0, though (w/ the inserts), ONE SIZE, we love.

We started off w/ Kissaluvs, and once G outgrew them we moved to BGs. With the next kid (should we have one), we'll do only BG's.

One size is the one I was checking out...that way it doesn't seem like you are constantly upgrading sizes...hmm...I wonder if Jillian Drawers would do that..that would be super cool.

  • If you want to get hands on the different styles, I recommend going over to TinyTots...even go to their class.  It was really helpful to see all the different ones in person and hear pros and cons.

BTW-DH is finding cloth diapering a cinch!  (it's the swaddle he's struggling a little with)

Good idea about Tiny Tots....We may run down there to get a feel for them...and actually I was super surprised when DH said he would totally be on board for cloth diapering! =)
