Anyone heard of/had fluid on the kidneys during pregnancy?

Yesterday I started having severe back pain and vomiting. I started having contractions and the pain in my back wouldn't go away with rest so I went to L&D and found out I have fluid on one of my kidneys as a result of being pregnant.  I spent the day in L&D undergoing tests, ultrasounds etc. and they basically told me there's nothing that can be done and I will have to deal with it for the rest of my pregnancy.  I will have flareups now and then but so far the pain hasn't gone away unless I am sitting down.  It's bad when I lie down so I guess I am going to have to sleep in my recliner until it gets better. 

My MW said this is very common in pregnancy but I googled it and most of what I found was about the baby having fluid on his kidneys.  Anyone had this or heard of it?

Well what happen with me the first time it I had a kidney stone blocking the path so basically fluid backed up into the kidney causing it to swell, but the urologist told me that it gets worse with pregnancy because the baby is squishing the tube from the kidney to your bladder so the fluid cant flow and again backs up into your kidney causing it to swell. I know it sucks hope you feel better and I hope that answers your questions.

Yes! I am dealing with it right now.  DH works at a urology office so I saw his doctors. I got the same answer, I have a stone in my right ureter that is causing fluid to back up into my kidney.  My ob has given my 5 of loratab for when the pain in unbearable, I have only taken it a few times I  can usually manage my pain with Tylenol, heating pad on kidney or laying on my opposite side to get LO off ureter. If after i deliver i am still having problems then they will do lithotripsy on stone.  GL!!

It is called hydronephrosis.... and yes, very common in pregnancy.  It is caused from the uternus pressing on the ureter (the tube that carries urine from kidney to bladder).  Usually it resolves on it's on after after birth.  Can cause pain and nausea.  If pain meds are ineffective, you can recieve a temporary stent placement.

This! I was diagnosed with bilateral hydronephrosis (fluid on both kidneys) at around week 28 or so. It's definitely been pretty painful for me, but I choose not to have a stent placed and just deal with it (my husband had a stent for kidney stones and was miserable). I don't know if the pain has gotten better or if I've just learned to tolerate it better at this point, I did find standing was the most comfortable position for me during the day.. I had it with my first pregnancy... A urologist placed a stent, but my ureter was almost completely obstructed so something had to be done. The stent was really uncomfortable but it was better than the kidney pain. Hope it gets better, good luck!
