2nd Trimester

While I was browsing in Motherhood Mat....

A VERY pregnant lady came in with a stroller and I over heard her telling the cashier that she has gestational diabetes, this is child number 6,

AND that she still has 7 weeks to go but has an amnio in 3 weeks and if the babies lungs are developed they are inducing her because the baby is only sup. to weigh 3 lbs but weighs 7 lbs Indifferent

ok just had to share that.

  • I work at a Children's Hospital and the babies of moms with gestational diabetes tend to run on the larger side. And I mean large. When placed next to NICU babies, they are ginormous!!!!! I might have a screwed vision because I am around 2-5lb babies more often; a 10lb baby just looks crazy to me!

lol!   I find this funny only because Natalie was in NICU for 3 weeks (she was full term, but was having seizures due to brain bleed - she's fine now).   I thought she looked big (she was 5lbs. 8oz) next to the other babies, but so many people were asking how premature she was...... I thought it was funny at the time, but I was probably a bit delusional.....

I hope everything goes well for the motherhood mat. store lady!

I am glad to hear that Natalie is doing well! I held a baby thinking he was perfect size one night in the NICU. I was thinking it wouldn't be so bad pushing a LO out his size. Come to find out he was only 4lbs. I don't necessarily want one that little but it just goes to show that I have no sense of what a "healthy" baby should weight at term!!!!

Yep.   Natalie was healthy (except for the seizures - the bleed was absorbed and she has no predisposition to any future problems).   She's still pretty small -(3rd%), but super healthy.  Olivia was small too.   I worship NICU staff, btw!   They are the most amazing people!

  • Yikes! That's one big baby! My cousin was born at 9lbs 14oz. - no idea if my aunt had GD or not but yikes! I hope my LO isn't anywhere near that big.

Not always the case. My SIL is a diabetic and her second baby was 10lbs 1oz at 2 weeks early. Her diabetes are controlled by an insulin pump and is very strict about her diet. GD babies are generally just big, some bigger than others.

  • The 22 lb baby born last year was born to a woman with diabetes.  Yikes!
  • OMG that's a big baby!  Ry was always measuring "bigger" (I didn't have GD) but I was scared about how big he was going to be.  He was 8lbs 11oz a week early.  That's not nearly as bad!  BUT, I do agree, he looked huge next to the little teeny babies!
  • Whoa.  More than double where it should be?  I don't know what to think...

On a side note, my DH and I find out the sex on March 10th, too!
