The BIG debate in my house!

My husband and I are bickering about FF!!!

When we prepare the bottles, we put the water in, then the formula...when you do that the water goes up about 1/2 oz. when LO is done feeding and if there is any formla left, I count how much we put into the bottle, not where the water moved up to...my DH counts were the water moved up to after the formula was put in ( are you following?)  which is right/??

Re: The BIG debate in my house!

  • I'd count from when the formula is completely mixed in.

  • I worked in daycare and this is what we did  count from when the formula is completely mixed in.
  • After it's mixed is what we count from.    That way we know how much fluid she actually drank.
  • I put the water in, then add the formula, but I count from how much was added initially. I guess I never thought about it. So if I make a 4 oz bottle I think of it as 4oz, not 4 1/2 oz.

This.  It's only 4 ounces. The powder formula just displaces the 4 ounces of water and makes it look like more.

That's how I've always thought about it as well. I count the ounces of water that were in the bottle initially before the formula was added.
  • Once the formula's mixed, does it go back down? I've never really paid attention to that....
  • If I made a 4 oz bottle and there is only an ounce of formula left then I count it as her eating 3 oz. The amount of water that you put into the bottle is what counts as the ounces, not what the bottle looks like after adding the formula.

  • I have a good solution...put the formula in first, then fill it up with water to the appropriate amount to match the formula scoops.  That's how we've done it from day one.  The other way always made a big mess and I never knew the right answer for this very question!  HTH!

  • you are right :)

the powder displaces the water (like a pp said)...which is why the water appears to move up...but it is still the same amount of oz. that you originally put in.  Its like when you sit in a bathtub and the water level rises b/c of your body weight...there isn't suddenly more water in the bathtub!!

The act of mixing the formula also produces some air and bubbles which makes it look like more as well.

  • thanks ladies!!!  clojel - nice interrpetation :) I tried that with my husband except with wine - i told him that if i pour a 1/2 glass of wine and add 4 ice cubes and it makes the wine look like a full glass does that mean i am drinking a full glass of wine? he told me it was a completely different scenario.  hmmm oh well
