my dr never mentioned anything about keytones. just told me to check blood sugar and make sure that my bs numbers are within range. what the heck are keytones? what do they do? how do i check them? ive heard NOTHING about them... which kind of freaks me out.
Re: keytones? huh?? what??
spilling ketones = peeing ketones
Ketones are a result of your body burning your own fat for energy... not great while pg... meaning that you are not consuming enough calories when eating. Google it for more info.
I was spilling ketones at my last appointment with my midwife so she sent me home with some strips to monitor and try to eliminate my ketones by increasing my food intake and calories... a little tricky when counting carbs. I was able to get my results to a negative until this AM but I didn't have a snack last night.
When non pg people are trying to lose weight by eating low carb diets they might like it and see it as a positive sign that they are spilling ketones... burning stored fat.
Normally I wouldn't be testing at home but I had a moderate result at my last appointment and I am betting that if you have ketones in your urine at your drs appointment that they would mention it and address it then. I wouldn't worry about it.
Sort of - it happens when you're diabetic and your blood sugars are running high. Without insulin (whether injected or naturally produced) your body can't turn the food you eat in to energy, so you burn your body fat for energy instead.
You can spill Ketones when you are not diabetic. Some people who are dieting to lose weight strive for Ketosis... I was reading that it is ketoacidosis that affects you when you're diabetic and can be dangerous...
I am learning way more that I thought I ever would in this pregnancy!
