Late diagnosed hip dysplasia or spica cast experience?

My BFFs DD just turned a year old and they just found out that she has hip dysplasia. Her hip is completely dislocated and apparently has been since birth and she'll be getting surgery in two weeks to clean out the joint and relocate her femur. Anyone been through this or even something similar that your DC wore a spica cast? I'm just trying to see if I can find as much info to help her out as I can with caring for her DD in the cast and what types of things might be useful that she hasn't thought of.

I had a spica cast b/c of hip dysplasia when I was a little over 2. I think I was in it for about 4 months. I obviously don't remember it at all, but just wanted to give you some hope that everything will turn out fine! My mom said it pretty much sucked at the time- stock up on coloring books/crayons/snacks/Little People play sets to keep your DD occupied. But once it's over, the memory will fade fast and she'll never remember it. GL!
