Do they charge you to check it? I would think it is NOT luggage so they shouldn't.
In my bag: Nikon D90; 35mm 1.8, 90mm 2.8 macro (my fave), Lensbaby Composer with macro extensions. BFP after 13 cycles and one ectopic. Lost left tube 5/19/10.
Make sure you gate-check it--that way it's not as likely to be lost or beat up. This also gives you a way to use the seat on the plane if there is room.
gate check it definitely and no they are NOT supposed to charge you for the carseat or the stroller. keep in mind if you do use it on on the plane the child wont be able to use the tray and also it gives them to ability to kick the seat in front of them.

If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me. For I must be traveling on now. Because there are too many places I've got to see. -Allen Collins & Ronnie VanZant
My favorite verse!
Car seats are exempted items, so it is illegal for airlies to charge you to check them. We fly frequently with DS and always check the seat with the regular luggage and it is fine. We gate check the stroller.
