OMG! They are NOTHING like Cream of WHEAT! They ARE CORN. And you can make them sweet, savory, cheesy, put them with shrimp or chicken, make them into casseroles, etc.
BEST thing EVER! Especially with cheesy garlicy goodness.

OK, I love grits. Though I only like them with butter and salt and pepper. My dad puts sugar and butter in his and I find that disgusting. I love grits for breakfast with eggs. Yummy.

As a bit of a grits snob, I feel as if I should jump in. (Better late than never.) My family actually owned a grit mill, so I grew up with grits multiple meals of the day.
Most people who hate grits, have never had them prepared correctly. Cafeteria grits are horrible. They are usually made with water and no salt. We make grits with cream (usually half and half) and lots and lots of salt. Then add pepper and butter and you have the most unhealthy, wonderful goodness.
For dinner you can make them the same way, except for all the extra butter, use garlic.
I also only use stone ground grits, which get way creamier. This is hard to find outside of the south, so you can use the Quick Grits in the grocery store. (Not the instant!)
I have never personally had grits sweet in any way, and find that repulsive. Maybe it's a regional thing.
ETA: Though I posted a novella, I am in no way associated with all the Texas crazies. I am merely passionate.

Grits are every bit as delicious with some cheddar cheese mixed in as polenta is served with a good bolognese sauce.
Grits = Polenta, just served differently.
I grew up on polenta coming from Napa Valley, California and growing up in a big Italian family. Now I live in Georgia and lurve me some grits.

I think cream of wheat is pretty nasty, but I do love my cheese and garlic, so I'd be willing to give them a try if I could do it that way.
Can you even buy grits in WI?
Mmmm...cake!
Check on the breakfast aisle with the cream of wheat and oatmeal.
Then make this. Trust.

It's buckin's blog...they probably blocked blogspot.
But I made that last week for DH and he basically nagged me until I made more this week. He hates grits.
