Back up! Cats can't jump over baby gates?

Really?

  • Mine are going to have to learn how, otherwise they won't be getting to their food bowls.

  • My cats wouldn't. One is too large and there is a step right below where we'd have to put it so they would land falling down stairs on one side and not have enough space to jump on the other side.

  • I don't have a gate up yet but I think mine probably could ?? Her food is on the dryer and she jumps up there...I'll have to test this and report back.
  • I'm pretty sure my mom's fat lazy cat can't.  Or won't.  Thus, she gets her own special little door.

She also enjoys sunning herself juuuust on the other side of the gate right out of the dog's range if he sticks his head through her cat door.

    She's a ridiculous little beastie.

  • We put our gates up while I was still pregnant specifically so they could learn to jump them and adjust. Then we took them down while DS was small, and put them back up a few weeks ago. They have no issues and our gates are even a little higher than most because of how they attach to the walls. Sometimes they pause first like they need a plan, but they always make the jumps just fine.

We did get a curved gate for the top of the stairs to make it easier and safer for them though. I didn't like the idea of them hopping a gate and having to hit the stairs *just right* - this way they have a bit of landing to work with.

  • bah! I thought I had a good plan there for a second :)
  • This fat cat below is incapable of jumping over baby gates, but her more sleek brother can.  Poor kitty.  At least she hides in the basement 99% of the time, because she is also afraid of babies.

  • Our cat can jump one way only.

She can jump from the living room over the gate at the top of the stairs, but when she is on the stairs and wanting back up, she can't do it.

I don't know if it is because she's a big kitty (her breed is a larger cat breed) or what, but she can't do it.

I'm forever having to get up and open the gate or she just whines about it.  Ugh.

hahaha me too! I don't want my cat to jump over them but I'm sure she will, she's a biitch like that.

  • mine might have been able to but i hated the idea of him having to jump the gate *every* time he wanted to get to his food dish, so we installed the gate about 6 inches off the ground so that he can crawl underneath it.
  • We ended up putting ours slightly above the ground - enough so that our cat can crawl under them - he's too big and too old to jump over safely.

I was just skyping with DH and that's what he said we could try.

Yeah, I don't even have a cat, I'm being used and this can only go on for so long. He's such a man. Comes and goes as he please. Stops by for a quick snack, a pet or a nap and is off again. The other day I saw him at the neighbors! Surprise

  • umm mine does.  Very easily.

I know! I was just starting to have feelings for him. We even snuggled once Crying

  • Both of our cats can.  It took the younger one about 5 seconds to figure it out.  The older one needed about a week.
  • I have an 18 pounder that makes it over!
