C-sections & Birth Photography Questions

Heather's response to the photography post got me thinking.  I had an unplanned c/s the first time and will have a planned one this time around.  I'm not sure what the rules are for photography in the OR.  My mom was in with us the first time and got a few (not so great) photos, but I am so thankful for what we have.  I was completely out of it and don't really remember much.

Anyway, has anyone had a photographer present at a c/s?  Or just after? I'm wondering if this would be something worth looking into.  Thanks!

Re: C-sections & Birth Photography Questions

  • i had a planned c/s the first time around and my husband was able to take some great pics of tyler coming out. however, there were very strict rules that no video was allowed and only one person in the operating room so there is no way a photographer would have been allowed. also, tyler was wisked off to the nicu after delivery so had we hired someone after would have been pointless.

def check the hospital policy because it may allow someone to be in there in addition to your husband!!

  • I have seen two done and I really liked the outcome, I think I might have it done just because your in such a high after and the pictures capture all that emotion.

One by Jen Skog, and one by KellyM. I know Life in Motion (not local) has done a bunch of them too, so you can get an idea of what they look like.

  • They only allowed my husband in with me, so he took the pictures. I would check with your dr and see if they allow more than one person in there with you.

I thought I should clarify all the ones I have seen they are NOT in the room. They are right out of the room to capture like Dad telling the family, or Dad right after and then when the Mom comes out of recovery.

  • My SIL delivered at CPMC in SF and pictures were not allowed - my brother snuck a picture with his phone, but wasn't supposed to.

  • Pictures and accompaniment beyond your partner into the o/r are rarely allowed.  Check with your hospital about what they will let the photog do and where they allow them to be (most likely just pre-op, nursery, and recovery).
  • Ditto to all of the above. I have worked one C-section, not allowed in the OR but was there before and after. In the future I hope to have an extra SLR handy to send in with the husband to the OR if I am not allowed in the room.

It was mine! We had my little phd and the nurses got some good shots in to OR and then Kelly was able to take over in recovery.

It was totally worth it. I have amazing images of the first feeding and the first few hours together. Honestly, I had forgotten almost all of it (morphine) so i'm so glad she was there.

I'll be sure to link the slideshow when it's up. Here's the sneak peek:

  • My cesarean was not planned exactly but we knew it was a possibility.  I asked my OB in advance (on the recommendation of my doula) if I could have a second person in the OR.  When the time came, he said totally as long as the anesthesiologist says there is enough room.  And there was.  So my mom came in too.  We had a DSLR and she took a few pics and the anesthesiologist took a few pics too (which I posted in the original post).

I think it totally depends on the hospital, the OB and the anesthesiologist at the time.  But the before and after pics would have been worth it for me.  I have some ridiculous photos of our first feeding taken in the recovery room (my "hat" is totally on crooked, I look delirious and I'm still hooked up to monitors while BFing for the first time) but the ones taken about 1.5 hours later in our room?  Gorgeous!  And taken just by DH with our DSLR.

  • I was gonna ditto pps about they probably won't be allowed in the OR. But, my cousin just started doing photography and took photos for her friend for her c/s...then again, the daddy waited outside during the whole thing.
  • I had an emergency c/s at Stanford and they only allowed one person in the OR with me. So my mom took my camera and took pics for me in the OR.
