Adoption

Adoption Questions?

Hi Ladies! I'm new to this board!!! My hubby and i just found out recently that we can't have babies, so we are strongly concidering adoption and were wondering.... How long do most couples wait to get a baby? How did you find your agentcy? How has the process been for you?? Sorry I have so many questions, but have now idea where to begin!

TIA,

Meg:)

Re: Adoption Questions?

  • Start with the book Adoption for Dummies. Or one of many in ColoRxGirl's blog (you'll see posts from her below). It lays out the different types of adoption (foster/adopt, domestic, internation) and how to go about it (agency, law firm, facilitator, etc.). From there you'll start to make decisions on which path you want to take to build your family.

Google, adoption.com, adoption.org, and resolve.org all have adoption resources. You can even check your phone book to see what agencies are near you. Some have informational seminars to help you get the basics down.

The wait time varies SO much, based on the agency/law firm you use, what you're open to (race, ethnic background, background of birthparents), and whether you go domestic, international, or foster care.

The process has actually been pretty smooth for us so far.

  • I'm new too :-)

I think the wait can range GREATLY. My husband and I are involved with a facilitator and we were chosen right away but that birthmom decided to parent (which is totally great!!!) and we're currently pre-matched again with another choosing us just today so there is sort of a back up if you will...we've been involved with our facilitator since september.

The process has been so easy for us actually. We know this is the right road for us to be on so it's a peaceful journey for us. You certainly gain a lot of patience in the adoption process :-)

Like the previous poster said, do some research on it before choosing which avenue you;d like to pursue. Good luck

  • Hi, and welcome to the group!

Dr.L put it well, the first step is doing lots of research.  Wait times, costs, risks, and processes vary greatly depending on the type of adoption you pursue.  I usually suggest that people considering adoption should check out an introductory book on the subject, because there are so many different kinds of adoption, each with its own process.  I think books like "Adoption for Dummies" or "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Adoption" (which I used) are a great place to get started.  They provide lots of basic information on adoption, the different types, the processes, and how to research an agency.  Another good book is "The Complete Adoption Book."  Any of these will help you decide which type of adoption best ?fits? your family.

If you then decide that domestic adoption is right for your family, you?ll need to find a good agency.  I highly recommend researching any agency you are considering to make sure it abides by ethical standards.  For domestic agencies, a great place to look them up is on the yahoo group called "AARD" (Adoption Agency Research ? Domestic).  That group is dedicated to giving honest feedback on agencies.  You can ask about the agencies you are interested in directly, and also search their archives and files.

If you choose international, you?ll then need to pick from which country. The US Department of State's website lists the requirements to adopt from each country (https://snipurl.com/2patx
).  Once you've made your country choice, you'll need to find an agency that has a program specializing in adoptions from that country.  The yahoo group "Adoption Agency Research" is a phenomenal resource for vetting agencies, and works the same way as ?AARD.?

    Good luck!

  • Welcome, the women on here are wonderful!
  • Welcome to the group!

Dr.L & Capt. made great suggestions to you. We started with a handful of books including Adoption for Dummies to get started.
