holy hell- PAIN!

Saturday mid-morning I started having this sharp, then dull ache in my way-low back, through my hips and down my legs and it's lasted all wknd and still there now. I haven't slept in 2 nights because of this pain. I called the nurse this morning, she's pretty sure it's sciatic nerve pain. Which sucks, because that means it's probably sticking around until I delivery this baby. :( She told me to keep taking Tylenol (i hate taking meds!) and gave me some exercises/stretches to try. I hope it helps, this pain is ridiculous!!! Feels like my back is broke in half.

  • Back pain is the one consistant thing I had with DS and this pregnancy.  But it wasn't nerve pain, so I feel for you!

  • Yep, I've had it off and on. But mostly off. It flares up occasionally but not often, so hopefully that will be the case with you, too.

  • Do you happen to have one of those giant inflatable exercise balls that you can sit on?

no, but if it would really help- I'd go buy one....does it really help?

It doesn't hurt to sit, it just hurts to move.

  • I had sciatic nerve problems with my last 3 pregnancies.  Make sure you do not apply heat, that makes it worse.  Prenatal massage, especially if you start getting them when the pain is relatively new in the pregnancy, can work WONDERS.  GL!

crap! Really?? I keep trying hot showers (which I love, but doesn't seem to work much). I was going to try a heat pack next.... does cold work better?

  • Yes, it definitely sounds like sciatica pain.  I had it bad with Kyle and have been getting it again with this little one.  Although it may last for all of the pg, my OB said it can lessen over time as the baby shifts and takes some of the weight off of the sciatic nerve.  Fingers crossed it improves for both us!!!

  • Go to the chiro--they helped my sciatic pain a lot!
  • You can use heat on the muscles but not on the spine.  The best thing is to put ice right on the spine on the spot that it hurts, heat for the surrounding areas.  Do the stretches it will help your spine re-align.  I have this issue off and on since my first pregnancy.   I totally know the pain you are feeling and don't wish it on my worst enemy.  I hope you feel better.

I didn't do anything. It kind of just seems to ease up on its own.

Yeah, I guess! LOL. I'm not sure what I did. But I did use a heating pad when the pain got bad. It didn't really help per se, but I don't think it made it worse, either.

It seemed like the pain would start when we were on airplanes for whatever reason, and then abate a few days after we got wherever we were going. Very strange.

  • My dr gave me a whole bunch of different stretches and positions to lay in to help relieve the pressure. It didn't make it go away, but it relieved it for periods of time.

Sorry, I got side tracked....during my PG with DS1, I remember a lot of girls said it helped a lot. I didn't have sciatica, but sitting on one did help take the pressure off my back.

  • thanks Dai- I'll see if I can find one to try out.
  • Yeah, it sucks.  Mine definitely flares up and then goes away.  Exercise really helps relieve it for me.

I'm starting this tonight, I hope it helps quickly.

  • Have you tried seeing a chiropractor? I have had back pain and some sciatica throughout this pregnancy and my chiropractor has done wonders for me.
