Working Moms

working and not STTN

How the hell do you WM go to work the next day and be functional and productive when your LO doesn't STTN?

DS goes in spurts of STTN and not STTN.  He does neither consistently.

The nights he is up I'm like a freaking zombie the next day and I'm not back to work yet.  (I go back in 3 weeks).

Re: working and not STTN

  • It sucks. Mine is consistently not STTN. Up at 2 and 5 am every day. I am drinking lots of coffee and napping on the weekends. And sometimes not making sense when I talk to my coworkers.

Ditto!  It sucks!!  For us it is either one or the other or both babies!  So we feel like we never catch a break.  But I keep telling myself that they will have to sleep someday.

  • Basically you just suck it up and tell yourself that you're not the first one to go thru it.  It's a rite of passage, I suppose.  This isn't supposed to sound mean, it's just one of the "less fun" aspects of being a working Mom.
  • Coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. And I switch off nights with my husband so we at least get some restful nights.
  • Know that practically every parent with a baby is going through the same thing.

    Lots of coffee.

  • This is the main reason we co-sleep.  DD has sttn ONCE since we brought her home from the hospital.

  • We co-slept.  DD didn't STTN till we implemented CIO when she was 11.5 months old.  She was waking up 2-3 times a night to nurse.  I knew it was just for comfort and not for hunger.  I had a very hard time getting back to sleep if I had to get out of the bed and go to her room.  Once we started co-sleeping she would maybe wake up once per night, and I could fall back to sleep easier.  I know co-sleeping is not for everyone, but it worked for us.

  • It's hard but you get used to it. DS will STTN every few days, some nights though he will go until 3 or 4 a.m. and then I just go check on him and give him a few pats and he goes right back to sleep. So I will get 4-5 hours in a row and then another hour or two if I am lucky. If I can get 6 hours I am golden. But I still drink lots and lots of coffee.
  • Same here - lots of coffee, and honestly, I've gotten used to it. I find it really funny that before I had a kid, I wanted to DIE at work the next day if I only got like five hours of sleep for whatever reason. Now it's the norm!

DS gets up 1-2x/night to eat - if it's once, I feel fine, if it's twice, I feel more tired, for sure. The few nights that he keeps waking up, I'm exhausted the next day, but I tell myself I'm lucky that those nights are few and far between!

And yes, we're all in the same boat, and I just remind myself of that. :)

  • Since I've been back to work DD has STTN twice (once I got to sleep, the other the damn neighbor's dog barked for 8 hours straight so I didn't sleep).  I'm a zombie in general.  I'm not particularly productive.  But I'm here.

  • I just take it one day at a time.  I also drink a lot of coffee during the day.  Wyatt usually goes to bed about 8:30 and will usually sleep until 2-3 and then eat and go back to sleep until 5:30.  Lately, I guess he is going through the 4 month wakeful because he was up about 3 times last night.
  • try to take care of yourself.  sleep in on the wknd if possible.  i ebf, but if you don't split duties with your DH!  go to bed when your LO goes to bed if possible.  I am getting over a nasty strep throat - I think I got sick b/c I haven't slept since August.  I am still struggling with what to do about sleeping.  my DS has gotten better about sleeping as he gets older, btw.
  • You just survive...seriously. I went back to work at 7 weeks pp and DS still doesn't sttn at 14 months (although fortunately he just wakes 1-2 x now).

    Lots of coffee!
