Dog holding his eye shut...

I just noticed that our dog is holding his one eye shut.  I tried to look at it and he squinted and yelped when I tried to pull it open.  I don't see anything stuck in it or any bleeding or anything, but it's red and a little swollen.  Oy.  I'm thinking DS did something to him.  Anything I can do to help him feel better?  I don't think it's an ER visit but if it's still swollen tomorrow I'll take him to the vet.

We have a Jack Russel & he is forever scratching his eyes.  Usually he'll hide under our bed for a little while & be fine the next day.  Our vet has explained it as the same as a minor scratch on our cornea...extra rest with the eye closed & it'll be fine.

Could he have gotten stung by something?  If thats the case benadryl should help.  (1mg per pound of dog)
