Babies: 3 - 6 Months

OMG, I lost my freezer stash!

I had well over 1500oz(yes, 1500oz) in a deep freezer in our garage.  Thursday I noticed that the outlet had tripped so I reset it and assumed that all was fine because I knew that it hadn't been down long enough for anything to have gone bad.  Well, I think something may have happened to the actual freezer in the process.  I went to rearrange the milk and put some food in there as well and noticed that some milk was thawed.  I thought that maybe it was an isolated bag that just needed to be tossed but as I went through all the bags just in case I noticed that they had indeed thawed and were now partially frozen.  There had also been 8lbs of hamburger in the very bottom and it had obviously thawed and refrozen.

Since I don't know how thawed it got I had to toss all of it.  It is taking a lot right now not to just start crying.

Luckily I do have a great supply so I know that DD will have enough milk.  I just feel bad because I was supposed to donate some milk on Tuesday and my plan was to stop pumping at 9 months but still have enough of a freezer supply to get us through 12 months.  I know now that I won't be able to donate and have a generous freezer supply.

UGH!

  • Wow, one time I accidently dumped 3 oz in the sink and that made me break into tears. I'm sorry but like you said, at least you have a good supply. Unfortunetly, that wasn't the case for me.

  • I am SO SORRY!!! That's terrible!! But good for you for wanting to donate- your supply will keep up to make it happen, I'm sure of it!!
  • I thought I saw on here earlier that there was a study that said thawing and re-freezing BM was ok.

  • Uuuuugh. This make my face crinkle up in such a way as to say, "Oh, maaaaan! SUCKS!" I might have cried if I were you.

Maybe, but I don't think I would be able to still give the milk if there was a possibility of it being bad.  I know I wouldn't want to eat something that had been thawed then refrozen.

  • I'm sorry, that sucks, but I know exactly how you feel. I had to toss over 300 oz of BM because of freezer issues and this was after I had started to wean myself from pumping. At least you still have your supply so that you can work it up again.

  • Wow. I once spilled part of my baby's 4 oz bottle and I started bawling. But then, I had a crappy supply. Still, I would be so depressed if I were you.

  • Oh no! Breastmilk is like the holy grail in my house so I can't imagine how you must feel to lose all of that.

  • This is one of my biggest fears with the approach of hurricane season. I live in South Louisiana, so we pretty much have to clear our freezers every time a storm comes our way. I've been trying to think of ways to bring it with us in the case that we have to evacuate! Hope you can build it back up again!
