Do you have any irrational fears?

For some reason I think anytime someone in front of me throws out their cigaratte that it's going to ignite my gas tank and blow up my car. I swear. I cringe each time and pray the spark goes out before I drive over it. Maybe that's not really irrational ... but it's one of my fears nonetheless.

Re: Do you have any irrational fears?

  • I have a bizarre fear of water towers (the thought of being trapped in there with no way to get out and drowning makes me shudder- I grew up a block from two water towers, so I guess somehow that's what triggered this particular fear) and large machinery, like those huge industrial satellite dishes. I also fear nuclear reactors (I used to have to drive by one on my way to work and it would make my blood run cold to look at it).

    I think that's it.

  • tidal waves is prob the most irrational. I love and greatly respect the power of water.

airplane crashes, but I take Ativan for that one.

fires occurring and blocking a staircase (I was in an arson fire as a child). You bet your bippy I have a fire ladder on my second floor.

  • Oh I so won't tell you all of my irrational fears that I truly can rationalize sometimes.  But yes, I do have them too.
  • Vccake -- I have never heard anyone other than my high school math teacher say "bet your (sweet) bippy"! Lol.

Public restrooms scare me in general. I also def. have a highly irrational fear of dying in a plane explosion on takeoff.

I also am afraid when I walk into a room, look in the mirror or am at my kitchen sink I will see a ghost. That would be my fault for watching all those dumb haunting shows.

  • Aliens.  Ohhhhhh aliens TERRIFY me!!  As a child, I was sick with pnuemonia and couldn't walk, etc.  My dad would have to carry me from place to place.  One night, he was watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind (seriously, my pulse quickened just typing that!) and I was SOOOOO SCARED, but too weak to do or say anything about it.  There's a part where a child is being taken to the ship (I guess?), and his mom is FREAKING OUT, grabbing his leg as he goes out the dog door (again, I think?) . . . OMG, I was seriously traumatized!

Dave every so often tries to get me to watch E.T. . . . but oh hell no!

Did you grow up in MI? What water towers do you live near?

I'm not sure my fear is irrational, per se, but I'm have a debilitating (sp?) fear of tornadoes.

and I'm almost too embarrassed to admit it, but I very rarely drive on highways because I hate merging on/off ramps and think people won't let me on/off and I'll crash.

You would hate Alabama ... especially in April & November. Heck, we had one about a month ago. I hate them too and have lived here all my life.

  • Oh, and the idea of being buried alive makes me want to break down and weep. I'm SO claustrophobic that the idea of dying doesn't bother me as much as the idea of being inside a coffin underground. OMG, I would lose my mind.

  • spiders.  Irrational because I am NOT afraid of tigers, snakes, gorillas, jumping out of planes, stuff that can really hurt you.  But spiders, yes.

  • Someone breaking into the house while just DD and I are home.  Scared to death that someone would do something to me in front of her or DD be left alone because something had happened to me.  Ugh.

Wish there weren't a**holes in the world.

  • I have a irrational fear that I will check on Ian and find that he is not breathing. At 3 years old I check on him repeatedly through out the night.

I have so many irrational fears that I cant even begin the list.

  • I have an irrational fear of the garbage disposal.  Well at least putting my hands in the disposal.  I don't know why but I have this fear that it will spontaneously turn on or that I won't see someone else turn it on.

I'm terrified of bathrooms. Period. I think it's because I was trapped in one with 5 other people when I was about 4 years old. Scared the crap out of me.

Let's just say, I keep the doors to my bathroom at home wide open. And do not use public restrooms at all.

Oh and all lights have to be on. I watched the mummy when I was younger and it scared the shiit out of me. I'm afraid that sucker is gonna show up somewhere and suck the juices out of me. (It's irrational I know. I can't help it.)

So that makes me... terrified of the dark and terrified of bathrooms.

I don't think this is all that irrational. They may be poisonious. You can't see the suckers when they crawl up you can bite the shiit out of your arm or neck. Had a black widow do this to me. Put me in the hospital for 3 days. How was I supposed to know I was being slowly poisoned?? I didn't even see the fvcker!
