How many IU's of follistim?

I had my injection training today and I got my med and dose amount.  I'm doing 150IU/day of follistim.  I don't know why I am nervous about it.  I think because I don't have an ovulation or follicle problem I am worried that doing 150 will be too much and I will overstim.  I am unexplained, the only issue we've seen is a thin lining.

How many IU's of follistim did anyone do for an IUI cycle?

  • I did 75 for 8 nights for all 3 IUIs and responded with one follie each time.

Depending on how things look after your first monitoring appointment they may adjust your dosage.

  • That does seem like a lot (I took 200 of Follistim for an IVF cyle and got a $h!tload of eggs), but I'm sure your doctor has a reason for starting you out on that dose.  Maybe your bloodwork or other test has given some indication that 150 is the right dose for your IUI cycle.

You don't want to second guess your doctor's every move, but if something is worrying you, just ask.

  • Hi.  I think I recognize you from another board.

I started this IUI with 150IU of follistim (gonal-f).  After 6 nights they decreased me to 75.    They will get a really good idea about how you are responding and if they need to decrease your dose at your first monitoring apt.  When is your next apt?

  • I used to do 150 and I only overstimmed once

  • My first cycle with follistim and TI I started with 150 -- and they dropped me that same cycle to 75ius and stimmed for 7 days before trigger and had 4 follicles.  Usually they will monitor you closely and will drop your dosage if you are responding too quickly.  Second follistim and TI cycle I did 112.5 and stimmed for 10 days before trigger and had 6 follicles.  RE said slow and steady is better than "off to the races" when it comes to stimming, especially with egg quality.

  • I am also Unexplained. My IVF calendar is in my blog if you want to see it. I started with 200IU of Follistim and dropped to 150 after two days of stimming. I ended up with 6 eggs. You'll be fine.
  • 225 iu for 12 days, 4-5 follies.

    But I'm an old bird.

I ready your blog entry, I'm not sure I would not put my money on triggering after 5 days of stims, you could continue for a few days or more after that. I know I have a different set of parameters, but I stimmed for 2 more days after my initial estimate to get more follies on board. My RE wanted me to grow them slow and steady.

Having enough medication on hand is also important, so don't skimp on that either, although the cartridges are overfilled.

Good luck! I was surprised how easy the injections were.

  • For three of my four IUIs I did 150 of Follistim for about 9 days. I'm PCOS but I never overstimmed, 150 seemed to be my magic number. For all four of my IUIs I went in with 1-3 follies each time. For my IVF cycle they had me on 225 and it's the only time I've had more than a few follies, which was the goal. Don't worry you'll do fine, they'll keep an eye on you with the monitoring and make any adjustments they feel are needed.

BTW: My first IUI was kind of funky in that my RE started me really low (50 ius) and slowly increased my dose until we saw progress. So that's why I say I did 150 for three out of four IUIs.  GL to you on your cycle!

  • I did 150IU for 7 days for my recent IUI. I always responded well to clomid (1 follicle of 50mg). RE told me that 150IU is his standard starting dose. I procuded 3 mature follicles and a bunch of smaller ones.
