NBR: Cryptic Bridal Shower Invitation

I received a bridal shower invitation in the mail the other day for a friend who I don't see often and the host is a woman I don't know.  Most of the information was standard, who what where when type stuff.  But at the bottom was the following message:

"Since they been engaged for eight years and don't need anything new, (bride's) wedding wish is a new backyard, and luckily it's on (groom's) to-do!"

Um....WTF does this mean?  Are they accepting donations for a new backyard?  Home Depot gift card??  Ummm??

  • Sounds like a request for donations in lieu of gifts.  You could buy them a shovel.
  • Read: "We want $$$, don't bother with the blenders."

    Are you going???

To me, money is more of a wedding gift. Bridal showers are more gift-giving events.

That's the hostess trying to be cute about asking for money. I agree with the above that showers are for gifts. Buy them a roll of sod.

  • Could it be for your shower and they are trying to "throw you off"? lol
  • It sounds like they are letting ppl know not to spend their money on home kitchen gadgets or anything since they have it all... Yes, I would get them a home depot gift card for sure.

  • I think that's their way of saying no gift are necessary without it sounding tacky since it such taboo to do so.

  • What's more troubling is their grammar!

  • To me it sounds like they are trying to buy a house? Weird though
  • I'd bring a certificate for local nursery (green acres on Jackson Hwy and Watt) ...but would probably also call the hostess to make sure that's what it meant

This is how I read it - as in, don't bother with gifts the only thing they want is a yard and they're working on it. Also noted interesting (mis)use of grammar on an invitation.

  • I'd get them something that they could plant.  Or maybe a patio chair with a gift receipt.

  • If they want something for the yard, why isn't this a lawn & garden themed shower?  I agree with PP, clarify with the hostess when you RSVP.  It's confusing.
