Carter's in Isolation :(

Carter has been conjested since Monday. Every three hours the nurses have been suctioning his nose to help him breathe. Every so often he'd get completely stopped up and gasp through his mouth and his oxygen saturation would drop. Today he ended up having some pretty bad bradys so they put him back on vapotherm at 4.0 flow and 51% oxygen to make sure it gets through all the congestion. They also swabbed his nose and tested for RSV, which was negative thank goodness! They're testing for other viruses also and those results will be back in 24 hours. I also started to breast feed on Wednesday but am taking a break from that for now. The worst part about this was seeing him struggle so much to breathe. His breathing rate hardly ever went down because he would start breathing through his mouth when he needed to. Hopefully he's better and back to himself within a couple days. Until then everytime someone other than us comes in the room they have to wear a mask, gown, and gloves so they don't infect another baby. And we have to keep the door to our room closed. The doctor also told me that I don't have a good immunity to this particular cold virus or Carter would be immune so I have to be careful after holding him so I don't catch it. For DH we don't know whether or not he's immune.

  • Oh no!!!! I hope he feels better soon. :(
  • Ugh - we spent more time IN isolation than we did OUT (she and I both had MRSA and H1N1).  And for a good part of it, we ALL had to wear gowns/gloves/masks.  Hopefully Carter will feel better soon!

  • :( I hope Carter is better soon! Charlie went into isolation when he was about 4 weeks old due to MRSA and spent the rest of his stay there - 2 months in isolation! We had to wear gloves when holding him and couldn't visit him first - we had to see Lily first then Charlie and then leave the NICU. Aside from not being able to visit Charlie and Lily at the same time, isolation wasn't too bad. The room was nice and dark and quiet for him, we really liked his isolation roommate's parents and sometimes he even had his own private nurse!
