Cousin in jail.. again..

I know I probably shouldn't be upset about this because it "doesn't concern me" but it's just making me so mad! My cousin had a baby at 16, was into drugs, shoplifting, etc... just had her second baby who is now 5 months old (born early because she wouldn't quit the drugs while pregnant).. now she's in jail again, this time for 18 months, and her mom is taking care of both kids. I know it's probably not my place to judge because addiction is a real thing, but I just can't comprehend how someone could have 2 kids, and not care enough about them to get herself clean without being forced to by a court (and endangering her unborn child!)   I don't really know the point of sharing, it just makes me so sad.. she needs our T&P.

Those poor kids, poor mom! Maybe it's better that her kids are away from her.

Yep, same drama around my fam, he has 2 toddlers, and is getting ready to go for court-directed 6 months of rehab, in the state prison.  I don't get it either, I don't want to judge, but really.  Stop with the felonies, you are a parent.

That is a hard situation. You don't want to enable her... it will never help her improve. At the same time, you don't want to isolate her, because the children deserve a healthy life regardless of the mother's actions/choices. And-- she's family. I feel for you.

I'm sorry. This is tough. I do however think it's best that the kids are away from her a little bit. Maybe she'll miss them and clean up?

My ex-SIL (thankfully on the ex part!) was shooting heroin during her 1st and 2nd pregnancy and I have absolutely no problems with judging her.  Yes she was an addict, but she made the choice to get pregnant both times- they were not "accidents" in her case.  There were tons of T&P's for her and her unborn children and thankfully both children were and still are healthy. 

Sounds like the positive side to your cousin's situation is that her mother is taking care of the kids!  Hopefully that means they're in a healthy environment now! T&P

I don't understand it either but watched my aunt lose her two children (the younger one diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) because she refused to get clean and sober.  Lucky for the kids they were adopted by a family together and are probably MUCH better off for it, but it is a really terrible situation.

Addiction is a disease, but if losing your kids isn't rock bottom, I don't know what is...

This exactly!  And yeah I totally judge.  We all have choices in life.  I'll judge anyone on a stupid choice like that.  Don't do drugs!  Don't we all watch tv and take health classes to know what drugs do to us?  Sorry, but I deal with this, because my younger brother got into this crap and started stealing money from my parents and making their life a living he$$, so yeah I judge.  Can't help it.

I hear you there.. my cousin, even at 16 years old, was having sex like every day and didn't use protection at all. Her excuse? "Because I don't feel like it"

Just curious where in Maine you're from?  We have family in Bangor and Dexter- I love visiting them- Maine is sooo beautiful

I'm in Mapleton now, up by Presque Isle. We're actually going to Bangor tomorrow to visit some friends! There's a concert in Portland on Sunday we're going to as well.
