Would you go on a daytrip without a stroller?

I dont own a stroller. I own an Ergo and a Hotsling that I use daily. We havnt found the need for a stroller yet and am just starting to look into it now. We live in Coquitlam which is about 45min from Vancouver where the Olympics are. We will be going downtown to see all the Olympic hoopla & dont know if we should just bring a backpack (diaper bag) & our Ergo or if we should borrow a stroller? Would you go that far from home for probably about 4hrs with only an Ergo?

Any tips from successful BW outings would be appreciated!

P.S We are most likely driving to a skytrain station and taking that, you can take strollers or carriers on it. So we will be 45min away from our car too while were gone.

  • I would imagine a stroller would be a PITA with all the people! We went to a local event in the next town (a pancake festival) and that was much lower key than the Olympics but the place was packed. We didn't have Matthew yet but I was already feeling sorry for the moms with strollers. I think when we go this year, I'll just wear him.
  • I agree with PP.  When we've gone downtown, I feel sorry for the parents trying to get through the crowds with strollers.  There are so many people, I was so glad to have DD in our Ergo.

    GL and have fun!!

  • If it's a really crowded event like a festival or the Olympics, I would never bring a stroller.

    Carrier all the way :)

  • I agree with the previous posters re: you'll be fine without a stroller.  When the weather gets hot, you might want at least an umbrella stroller for outings, but for now, it sounds like you'll be better off without one.
  • Thanks ladies! I just feel a little insecure about not having a backup to put him in kwim? But I guess nothing is safer/more secure then a carrier. Just nervous what if he gets sick of the carrier?

  • I own a stroller but wouldn't use it in crowds like you are about to go into. I think you and your husband trading off carrying in the Ergo would be much better than taking a stroller.
  • Anytime we've brought a stroller for backup, it's been more of a PITA than anything & barely gets used. We really only use our stroller in hot weather & short trips - walking, the park, jogs (I have a Bob). Ari just prefers to be worn & it's easier anyway.

  • At your LO's age, no I wouldn't bother with a stroller.
  • Yay thanks, Im getting excited! I just youtubed a few videos on how to nurse in public in the Ergo so Im going to try it at home for the next feeding and see if he likes it. That would help so we wouldnt have to stop and sit anywhere.

  • Also, I'd bring both the hotsling and the Ergo, since it sounds like he's used to being in both.

That way, if he wants to have a look around, you can pop him in the hotsling in a hip carry but for naps or longer walks, throw him on your back in the Ergo.

Plus it will give your body a break having two carriers to switch things up with.

  • I went to the state fair for the day with no stroller (had DH along), sightseeing in DC (with DH), and to the zoo for the day without one by myself.

Totally doable especially since there are two of you.  I'd hate to have to have a stroller in a crowd.

  • That's exactly the kind of situation where I would leave the stroller at home!  As long as you don't have a ton of stuff to tote around (in which case, the stroller is great!) I would take your carrier and a back pack and be done with it!  no looking for ramps, stroller parking, people running into the stroler in cramped spaces...
  • I would definitely go with a carrier, it's going to be super crowded and loud and LO would probably prefer to be close to you :-)

I'd toss a lightweight blanket in your diaper bag.  If he gets sick of it you can always let him have some blanket chill out time if you can find an out of the way space.  Even when M was in his "I don't want to be carried" phase, it was only refusing our carriers but was content in arms.  With two of you I wouldn't worry too much.  You can always play pass the baby.

  • I wouldn't take a stroller especially if it will be busy. I carried DD at the children's museum the other day for about 6 hours with no problem. I used to carry DS for several hours a day without a stroller.

  • That age is perfect for a day in teh carrier!  When DS was 6 months old, we went to Washington, DC for a week.  Only took the Ergo.  We carried him everywhere.  It worked so much better than using the stroller.  Didn't have to find the ramps, store it in tight places, he wasn't freaked in the crowds, he'd randomly fall asleep, etc.  We also had a backpack we used as our diaper bag, and we just took turns carrying the bag or the baby.  Worked out so well!
