Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Cranky in the evenings

Baby Branson is so cranky in the evenings right now. He cries from around 5:30 till bedtime about 8.  He has had a lot of reflux issues so it is hard to tell if he is just having a hard time with that at night or if he is sleepy or what.  If it is typical colic wouldn't he be getting to the age where he would be getting over colic spells?  He usually wakes up from nap at 5:30 and cries non stop until his bed time bottle around 7:30.  Then he is fine after that and sleeps all night.  It is just getting really furstratring not to being able to enjoy dinner or anything in the evenings.  Anyone's baby this age still have crying spells in the evenings??

Re: Cranky in the evenings

  • You might want to try moving up his bedtime. That's the only thing that worked for my girls.  They go to bed around 6 or 630 every night.  We just gradually worked their bedtime back further and further (it started at 930) until we found the time that worked best for them.

  • I feel for you!  Today was the first day we had a fussy free evening.  In fact, this evening was the first time he ever laughed.  This am his dr diagnosed him as having a milk protein allergy and suggested we put him on Alimentum formula.  It may be the world's most expensive formula on earth but we already see a HUGE difference in him.  After one bottle he took the longest nap, then woke up happy as can be and stayed that way.

It breaks our heart to think he was that unconfortable and that we were causing it, in a way.  I was unable to EBF due to our dramatic, life threatening delivery and just a month ago went to EFFing.  We saw a gradual decline in his personality and increase in mucous in his poop.  I didn't realize that these 2 syptoms were definite indicators to switch his formula.  I knew something was wrong but wasn't sure what.

I would talk to your pedi about this, it seems a bit extreme to be just him being tired.  Since he has colick, there could be something causing it that can be fixed.  Good luck!

  • 1) Colic may not end until 4 months of age. My son had the symptoms and that's when it truly stopped.

    2) Try moving bed times... but it may also be early signs of teething. Ask your pedi about it, but also look into some Hyland's teething/colic tablets that contain camomile... they do wonders.

  • I say try moving the bedtime earlier and possibly the nap too. Even if my LO takes a late nap, he's still ready for bed around 7, it always surprises me, but I guess the day just tuckers him out!
