Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Motrin ?

DS will be 6 mos in about a week.  He has the flu right now and a fever, of course.  Tylenol doesn't seem to be helping, so would you give Motrin with just a week left until 6 mos?  I'll call the doc in the a.m. but wanted to know opinions.

Re: Motrin ?

  • It depends on how heavy he is. Check to weights in the dosage section.

  • I'd check with the ped. but our pedi went by weights on the tylenol more than by the age so according to that as long as he is over 12lbs. (which I'd think he would be by 6 months!) it would be okay.  I'd do it as long as he was within the weight table if I was that close to 6 months myself if DS was miserable and sick and he was that close, but I don't know what the doc would say.

  • DS is big 17lbs at 4 months and Pedi gave us the ok for motrin.  I would definitely call the doctor before giving any new medication and also for the proper dosage.
  • sure would. call your pedi to confirm dosage. alternate the tylenol and motrin every 4 and 6 hours to help control the fever.

good luck. i hope your LO feels better soon.

  • DD did this last week.  She is only 3.5 mo, but ER doc said to give both.  He said safe dose for tyl. is 15 mg per kilogram of body weight and for motrin it's 10 mg per kg.  He told us to use tyl and then motrin 3 hrs later, then 3 hrs after that, tyl again, so that she'd be getting something every 3 hours.  Worked like a charm, fever came down within a few hours. ps you can calculate body weight by pounds divided by 2.2 = kilograms.
