2nd Trimester

Tell me I'm panicking for no reason

We had our 12 week appointment today and though the doctor hunted for several minutes, he couldn't find the heartbeat.  With DD, it took about 2 seconds.  So tell me that I am freaking out for no reason.  Tell me that 12 weeks really is early and that if I've had no spotting or cramping I am fine.  I'm renting a doppler anyhow, but I need to feel better now, not in 3-5 business days.

  • You are fine.  That is early and can happen.  I had my U/S the other day (22 weeks) and you could see the baby's heartbeat and the baby move.  I had my appointment right after and the nurse had trouble hearing the HB (all she got was mine).  She could feel the baby kicking the doppler, but couldn't get a good fix on the HB.

    Don't panic.  You are fine!

  • Have they done an ultrasound yet?  I'm sure its fine.

  • Wait, so the doctor let you walk out of his/her office without hearing a heartbeat?  I'd be bangin' on their door demanding to hear it via doppler or ultrasound... stat!

ETA: But with that said, I'm sure you're fine.  12 weeks is really early.  I'm just saying... for the peace of mind of Mama... you want to hear that heartbeat!

  • 12 weeks IS really early for a doppler.  My doc didn't even try to find the h/b until 16 weeks.  Even then, the nurse warned me that she might not find it, and not to panic because it could be any number of things.  If your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be either!

  • Also, the at home dopplers can be tricky and you are less likely to get a better result than the Dr.  So if it doesn't work at home, don't panic.

If your Dr. was concerned they would have ordered an U/S.

  • Baby was probably just hiding, I'm sure it's fine. However, I do think it's really weird that they didn't go ahead and give you an u/s after that just to ease your mind. Sending you home worried is awful, I'd be mad!

    Exellent point!

    ?

This, did your doc send you for a sono to check on the baby's hb??

The doctor offered to get me an ultrasound appointment and I still may call them back and take them up on it.  He told me that he thinks the baby is in there, it's just too early to find the heartbeat.

  • At 14 weeks my midwife had a really hard time finding baby's heartbeat, she was down really low and she kept picking up mine on the doppler.  I would try not to worry about it so much and think good thoughts!
  • I have had no problem finding it before but today the baby only let me catch it for 2 seconds.  I was a little paranoid because of course for 2 seconds I started to doubt if it was the fetal HB I heard.  Baby is just playing peek-a-boo with me :-)

You are likely fine and my OB says he doesn't even try until weeks 13-14.  I am surprised they didn't do an u/s though to put your mind at ease.

    When is your next appt.?

  • At 17 weeks, we still had trouble finding the HB.

    I wouldn't worry just yet!

  • You are fine. My Dr. STILL can't find the HB with a doppler. She has a US machine in her office, and always has to look at him on there to check HB.

    Mine is just stubborn.

  • We didn't hear the heatbeat until about 14 weeks.  I was really worried because we had complications, but everything ended up ok.  I'm sure it's just early.

  • If you're panicking like your post says, give them a call and ask for that u/s!  But, hopefully, you have been reassured by all the posts that it is pretty normal to have a hard time finding the hb this early.  Good luck, Dear!
  • 12 weeks is early. My doctor tried at 11 weeks and wasn't able to hear anything but I asked for an ultrasound. The tech still wasn't able to pick up LO with an external u/s and ended up having to do a transvaginal u/s. I was then informed that I had a tipped uterus and that's why they weren't able to hear anything. It wasn't until about 14 weeks that the doppler at the doctor's office was able to pick up LO.

Just an FYI, I think that most dopplers available for home usage aren't nearly as powerful as the one at the doctor's office so don't let it freak you out if you aren't able to pick up the heartbeat at home for a while.

  • They couldn't find mine at 12 weeks so they sent me for an ultrasound. You could request one.
  • You'll be fine.  My doctor couldn't find the baby's hb with dopplar until like week 16.  We had to keep doing ultrasounds at every appointment to confirm the hb.  A little scary, but everything turned out a-ok!

  • i am 27 weeks and my midwife couldn't find mine!  i have a serious anterior placenta and we could hear the baby kicking, i can FEEL her kicking, but she hates the doppler.

take them up on the u/s and put your mind at ease, sister.  :)

  • Happened to me at 15 weeks.. They couldn't find it with a doppler, so he did an US and baby was there with a strong hb... It happens, I guess.
