How long would you wait on hold for a doctor after hours?

We tried to call the doctor once at 5:15am on a weekday and once this weekend at 2pm and after 20 minutes on hold we hung up. It was just a question about giving my DD some cold meds but I keep thinking what if it was something serious. The pediatrician's office is well recommended and there aren't many others to choose from but it really bothers me.

How long do you usually wait on hold? And how long do you feel is okay?

    Cant you call a 24 hour nurse line?

    I have waited maybe 20 minutes for myself.  My hospital actually has a program that once you have input your medical record #, if you choose to hang up, someone will call you back once they get to you.  They get to you in order of who calls first whether you stay on the phone or not.

    We always call a nurse's line, leave a VM and they call back within the hour.
