Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I was just given crap for taking a pump break.

Seriously. I have a supervisor who is leaving in May and has checked out mentally and physically. She comes in after 10 at least 1-2 mornings a week now, which makes it nearly impossible for me to take my pump break. So, I went really quickly before we opened and it spilled over into our open hours (like 8:55-9:05) while a teller was by herself (I had cleared it with that teller first).

So our manager asked me how I compensate for my breaks...do I take a short lunch or do I take that out of my 40 hours? I'm so angry at that question, because I asked before I returned from maternity leave if that was something I needed to consider or if there was a policy on that, and her response was "don't bother, just do what you have to do".

Argghhhh.....

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

  • Time to talk with HR.

  • Did you remind him what he originally said?
  • you pump for 10mins and the lady flipped on you? Geez some of the people I used to work with would spend longer times in the bathroom!

  • That is ridiculous!!!! It's not like you were hanging out!!!
  • You should check your state laws about pumping.  I know in my state, they say employers have to allow time for nursing moms to pump....and it shouldn't be considered a normal break.
  • A pump break or a bump break?

    I kid. I kid.

I think you should squirt her in the eye with some breast milk...

  • Super Angry That makes me angry for you! If it is mentioned again, I'd go to HR about it.  I mean WTH??? Sorry you have to deal with that!
  • No

I had to add 45 minutes to my work day so I could take 3-15 minute breaks for pumping. It's a crock of shiit.

  • That's so frustrating!  I know how you feel.  I never get to pump as much as I should at my job and I feel like no one is really supportive of it at all.  No one wants to cover me while I'm pumping so I have to bring my pager with me and it's inevitable that almost every time I'm pumping I have to cut it short cause I get beeped.  I find it really irritating that so many workplaces are not as supportive to breast feeding moms as they should be.  I'm sure many women give up breastfeeding before they wanted to because of it being so difficult to pump at their job.  It's definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.

Whaaaat? Aren't you required by law to take (or at least be allowed to take) two 15 minute breaks a day? I guess I could understand the 3rd one (maybe) but that doesn't seem right that you have to make that time up.

This- definitely worth asking HR what the requirements are.

I don't know what the law is. When I spoke to my boss about pumping breaks for when I came back from maternity leave, she said that HR required me to add 45 minutes into my schedule for it. It sucks :(

  • I've worked at places where ppl take more & longer smoke breaks.  That's all forgiven...I don't get it at all.

  • My HR response:

"We would recommend that the employee & the manager work together on a schedule that meets both the employee's needs and the business needs. If the manager has any questions ask them to give us a call." There is no standard policy for this type of event.   I don't think there is a law in NC regarding this, just BFing in public. But I'm calling the LLL leader on my lunch break to ask if she knows of anything. I take 2 15 min breaks in addition to my (unpaid) lunch break.
