I'm nervous about baby being on belly right now

Those of you who have been reading my posts know I'm having sleep problems with the baby.  She was exhausted, I nursed her to sleep and again, when I lowered her down to the crib, she woke and cried.

So I put her on her belly. She cried for about 1 minute and the she fell asleep. FWIW, she only rolls from belly to back occasionally.  And I know that once they roll themselves, it's okay if you go in there and find them on their belly.

But I placed her that way, and I know it's silly, but I'm nervous. Her head isn't completely turned to the side, (she's kind of face down, tilted to the side) but yes, she can breathe.  Am I being totally irrational right now?  I keep checking on her every few minutes.

  • She can lift her head really well; right?  I wouldn't worry.  Cohen has been sleeping on his tummy since about 8 weeks.  He started rolling that way himself.  But he couldn't roll back on his own.  I worried right away, too, but when he wakes up he lifts his head no problem.

  • Is she the one born in 7/09? (per your sig)

If so, then stop worrying. :) She'll be fine. And if not, try not to worry. My DS slept on his tummy from day 1. It was hard at first, but he had GREAT head strength and that was the best way we could all get some sleep.

  • It's hard not to worry but at her age, it's probably for the reason joseys pointed out.  Ethan and Brooke both wiggled and squirmed so much that they could twist themselves on their tummies.  I think probably by your DD's age, they do know they need to turn their heads if 'something's not right'...kwim?  Someone correct me if that's wrong.
  • You're not being irrational, you're just her mama!  Totally normal to feel how you're feeling!

I must have missed your sleep posts.  Have you tried putting an aquarium in there?  Both of mine love that thing and get sleepy just looking at it practically.  Since I haven't read your other posts though, that may not be of help at all!  I hope it gets easier soon!

Yes, she can. I just don't think she could move, or roll back over if she wanted to. And I think i'd worry a little less if her face was turned more outwards as well!

Thanks one-star-wonder....I didn't know it was so 'Poor' of me to worry the first time my 6 mo old was on her belly.  Silly me, for worrying. Confused

  • I bet she'll be fine!  Enjoy the restful sleep she is getting...but keep checking on her if it calms your nerves. Smile

    Hey Jodi!

She's just been in super separation anxiety mode- she won't nap or sleep at night more than 10-20 minutes.....and to sleep at night, I bring her in bed with me. Days have been hard b/c she's so exhausted, b/c she's only taking about (5) 10 minutes naps a day.  Last night- I must have gotten up about 8-9 times from 7-9:30 to keep putting her back to bed...patting her, rubbing her belly, re-nursing her, etc.  So I tried the belly thing just now. I've heard so many babies sleep better that way. Don't get me wrong, Ava slept on her belly--but only AFTER she got herself that way herself...so this made me nervous. And, FWIW, I asked the pedi at her 6 mos appt a few weeks ago if I could place her on her belly to see if she would sleep better, and he said they really don't recommend it until they can do it on their own.  Hence, my paranoia!

Yeah, I know how you feel.  And if you are not worrying about this, it will be something else.  That's what moms do!

  • Oh and Jodi  I forgot to mention, I don't have the aquarium, but I do have a sound machine in her room, and I notice that when it's her bedtime at night and I turn it on, she turns her head and closes her eyes..... but maybe it's worth looking into? What's the brand?

  • yep angelcare monitor.  Michelle was a belly sleeper since she was 3 weeks old.  She slept better that way because of her reflux/colic.  I agonized over it and pedi gave me the ok as long as I had the angelcare monitor.

  • We have the Baby Einstein one, but I don't think they make them anymore.  The Fisher Price one are good too.  I like it because it become such a part of their going to bed routine that as soon as they see it, they relax and don't fight being in their crib.  Naptimes and bedtimes are the easiest thing in the world right now (*knock on wood*)

What you're going through right now  is really rough.  Sam went through a phase where he wouldn't nap when he was about 3-4 months old and it was so hard.   It seemed like forever when we were going through it.  I feel for you.  The sleep deprivation is horrible and you feel like it will always be like this.  It won't though!  I just hope it gets better really soon for you!

  • DS was a belly sleeper from 6 weeks, and DD from birth. At 6 months, you really don't have much to worry about.
