IUI #2: BFN :-(

POAS yesterday, BFN, then it was confirmed later in the day by a negative beta. I am feeling really down. It makes me depressed and a little sick to my stomach when I think about how long we've been trying (off BC since Oct 2007, actively "trying" since summer 2008).

Like many of you, I never in a million years thought it would be so difficult. There are no obvious issues, though DH's sperm count was LOW for both IUIs (1.4m the first and 2.4m the second - though his SA last year was just fine). We've got an appt scheduled with the RE just to discuss options in a couple weeks. I know he'll suggest we move to IVF, which I really just don't think is for us (too wimpy to put my body through it, plus we're OOP so the cost is a turn off). I guess we'll just keep trying IUIs but there has to be a limit, I just don't know what to do and every month that passes just makes me so sad.

Just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

  • I am sorry that this wasn't your cycle.  Don't give up.
  • I'm so sorry.  Hang in there.

  • I know it's so hard to take those punches.  My third IUI was the charm.  It was my first month on injectables and I really, really, really think that's what did it for me.  Have you tried injectables?

Thanks to everyone for their support. We'll bounce back. This month had some other stresses which certainly did not help.

ougrad - I had one cycle that was Clomid for 5 days, then one 75 iu follistim shot, which was cancelled because I had 7 good follies. 1st actual IUI was just clomid (half a tablet for 5 days). Response was ok but I think they thought my lining was too thin. This cycle I did 6 days of follistim before triggering. I know they're just tweaking to find the perfect formula... hopefully 3rd time is a charm for me too.

  • Sorry this cycle was a bust. Hope you have better luck next cycle. HUGS.
  • (((((hugs))))

I am so sorry it didn't work this time.

Vent whenever you need to. We are here for you, and we all know the kinds of feelings you are  having, even if ours were inspired by slightly different circumstances.

I'm glad you're going to discuss options with your RE. We aren't going the IVF route, either. But there may be other types of IUI protocols you could try. You could also do the exact same thing again, but after a break. Perhaps your DH's counts will be better, since there is variation.

My point is that you are not out of chances.

But right now, just be kind to yourself. And know that you are not alone.

  • Vent away and I'm so sorry. Try and take care of yourself.

  • Im so sorry.  BFNs suck!
  • I'm sorry. <<Hugs>>

What about freezing some of your H's sperm?  The counts are pretty low. I have heard you really need a minimum of 5m for a successful IUI.  You could then combine the fresh and frozen sample to get a higher count. Might be worth asking your RE.
