Pregnant after a Loss

question about progesterone

After my first betas came in last time I remember the dr saying my progesterone was low (by that point we knew I was miscarrying, no need to go on supplements).  Do most doctors check this automatically after a miscarriage, or should I ask them to tomorrow when I go for my blood draw?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a dumb question.  I don't know anything and couldn't find out by googling.

Re: question about progesterone

  • I would ask for the supps.  A lot of doctors will give it to you as a precautionary measure.... mine did.

  • I'd ask for the progesterone to be checked, and ask for the supplements. They are expensive, but worth it.
  • Thanks!  I'll ask tomorrow.  I'll do anything at this point...trying not to think of $$ Tongue Tied

This. My OB doesn't believe in doing betas unless they are ruling out ectopic, molar or m/c. He did give me the supps when I was worried about having another loss.

  • With my first pregnancy, my doctor did a progesterone level with the 2nd beta.  The beta was dropping, and the progesterone was low-ish (9).  So, she told me that when we tried again to get pg, she would put me on progesterone supplementation just after ovulation.  I started progesterone this time at 5 dpo, and continued until yesterday (that's just when I ran out of pills).  Doctor said I could have stopped at 10 weeks at the earliest (way too scared to stop then) or end of first trimester.

  • My doc was not a big fan of progesterone after O, so I have been without.  But he checked my progesterone at the time of my betas, and all was well.  I would definitely ask for that test to be added to your labs - it's still just one tube of blood!

  • My OB never didnt check, he wanted me to start as soon as I got a BFP as a preventive measure. If it would help ease your mind or you think it could be a problem talk to your Dr. about it. FWIW its not a dumb question either.

This.  My RE has me on two different supplements, and wasn't even going to check my blood level until I asked.  I take 1 gram of a 10% cream vaginally and also 200mg oral Prometrium daily (stopping both at 14 weeks).  The cost depends on your insurance, both of these cost me $25 each, so not bad at all.  And at least for me the Prometrium costs the same whether I get 10 pills at a time or 60...so I've learned to ask my Dr for a couple months supply at a time!
