I'm near you. on SI . we're in a good district. our townhouse is around $500-600K... the single family homes in the neighboring neighborhood were 1mil last year.... down to $799-899K.
I've seen a 2br apt on the northshort near grymes hill in a good elem school district for $280K.
anywhere between 90,000 - 300,000 depending on the house & location within the school district. We have the best school in the tri-county area. We live an hour north of Albany, NY.
Our school has an excellent special ed. committee & services.

It depends--there are a lot of good elementary schools around here, some good middle schools and IMO only one good high school. The elementary ones are in a variety of areas, where you could get a house in that area for $100,000. For the high school, there are still a lot of neighborhoods with a variety of home prices. I'd say you could get into it in a neighborhood where the home prices are around $150,000, though I think most people live in the nicer neighborhoods where homes are $300,000+. It's funny, though, because the nicest neighborhoods go to the worst high schools around here.
A few of the smaller towns have really good school systems as a whole, and you could find homes in those towns anywhere from $75,000 on up.
What size house are you looking for - I mean, what do you consider "nice"? We're mostly looking at 3-4BR, fairly new, ~3000 sq ft (some more, some less), and we're finding some in the $280-300k range, but even better is the $350k range.
But, you can definitely find a decent house for less than both of those ranges.

My idea of a "nice" home in my PART of our school district could be anywhere from $300K to over $1M. Those include condos, not just single family homes.
Any house (and not elaborate by any means) in this area is 325 and up. This is for a small, older house with some outdated things. For an up -to-date home or new home it is over 400k
If you want a newer house, 2100 sqft or larger starts around $240,000 but the school district has an older home district in it with smaller houses that are 20 years old and you can buy those for $100,000 - $150,000, so it really just depends what type of house you want.
For something nice, probably about the same as where you posted, in my town and the surrounding towns. But you could go to other "less nice" towns with still good schools for a bit less, but not much. We're in the inner burbs of Bosotn.
We're in a decent township school, but still in the city....in probably one of the best neighborhoods for the district....and homes here range from $150-250K. We paid about 60% of that though for a VA repo...GREAT deal. Thats for about 2500 sq ft + basement, 4 BR, 2.5 bath, about 15 yrs old.
For the best schools around Indy - I'd say $200-300K for the average 'hood.
Well, I put in what you said in our search thing and the range was $250k to $3.5 million, haha. Quite the range. Most of the houses are clustered around $300k to $500k, though. I would say getting one that is nice, updated w/ a basement would be $350k.
It depends on your definition of a nice home. After watching House Hunters and seeing what people want/expect in a home I'd say 900K+. I know my friend is looking to buy a home in our district (specifically actually our elementary school which narrows it) and she does not mind a small fixer and is having no luck with a 600K+ budget. In fact the "lower priced home" (600K-700k) are still seeing bidding wars. Though we have definitely seen an affect for the housing crisis too .
So I'd say "nice" updated, maybe 1900sf, single family, non fixer would start in the high 800's low 900's though with a larger lot it would start a 1 million.
Here's one I'd say is "nice" for 900K--2274sf on a 9625 lot
We live in a good school district and it is anywhere from $260,000 for a small house to $1,000,000 for a new 4 or 5 bed with a basement and garage. Something in the middle is between $500 and $600K.
You can live in the burbs in a good school for $350K.
This house/mansion in Carmel, IN (where we used to live) never fails to crack me up. It was like 5 minutes from our house, and initially they had it listed for like $22 million, but now it's down to $9.9 million. Probably b/c it's tacky as hell.
The guy who built it is married to a former stripper and is involved in a court case (or was) with his former company (that now owns the house).
The listing leaves out some of the best parts of the house though - murals of the former owner as a warrior, the children's bathroom with scantily clad female scuba diver mural...

Minna's are you looking to move? I think we are lucky here because the middle of the road towns still have very good schools IMHO but the best two high schools in our county are crazy expensive towns. But I still feel like the schools in my town are good and you can get a very nice 4 bedroom house here for under $500k. But if money were no option I would be living out near Springsteen...actually in either of the towns he has a house in.

In the actual city....at least $350--$500K would be a better starting point. There are no good middle schools in the entire city though (except Charter ones)

at least 1.5 million and chances are the place needs work. in our district, that is for the attendance area for the "best" school in the district. you can probably get a house for 1 million for one of the "lesser" schools in this district. the neighboring district is awful. you'd have to go private.
Re: NPR: what is the going rate for nice homes in good school districts in your area.
1.5 million
yippee for HCOL
I'm in an amazing school district and my home was in the mid-to-high 300's outside of Philly. But the range of good homes here go into the millions!
I come from Westchester, NY and lived in DC -- and you could not buy a single family home in the 300. Or the 400's. Or maybe even the 500's.

E-- 4 BR/ 2.5 BA, basement. 1/2 acre. updated kitchen and baths. the going rate around here is over 700-1 mil.
maybe 2400 sq ft. also--the 700 range is for less than 1/4 acre generally. the 1/2 acre + goes up from there.
With this awful economy you can find nice houses in the best school districts in the 100s.

For a house - 3 bedroom - around a million+. For a condo, no yard, etc. a little less.
Most actual houses here are 1.5 million or above.

Actually you should do it on the ceiling of the foyer/entrance. I hear that's the best way to up your resale value.
Plus, then all your friends can see it too! WIN-WIN.
here, in the next town, it's $600K for an old crappy house. Anything nicer and with bigger property will be 1M+ and taxes of 15-30K a year.
that's also in NJ.
Out in the far burbs....from the $200Ks
