Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

OK, WTH? Anyone else have an LO

that will fake choking??  We had a very scary choking incident a few weeks ago and since then Lillian has been taking bites of food and will cough.  That's turned into her making choking noises on purpose.  I think it may be because DH and I both rush to her to make sure she's ok and she maybe likes the attention??  Its scary and its not funny but she thinks its the best thing ever.  I won't just start thinking she's faking it every time just in case she really is choking but I don't want her to start choking because she got some food stuck because she was playing around.  Help?

  • Yes, it drives me crazy. And it's even worse because my DH's cousin lost their little girl over the summer at 17 months due to choking. He does it on purpose now cause he knows I get crazy.

  • Yes! Caleb does fake choking sounds, fake coughing, and routinely sticks his fingers down his throat and makes himself gag (thankfully, he hasn't actually upchucked form this little trick yet). It's very annoying and quite gross. I'm hoping that he moves through this phase soon. Ugh. We try to not react too much (just make sure he's okay), because I think then he might carry on doing it, knowing it will get him attention.

  • OMG yes! DS does it all the time. Every time he does it, I know he's most likely faking it, but its still scary. I know they say to ignore bad behavior and they'll eventually stop, but how in the world do you ignore that?!
  • Yes he does sometimes.  I will look, but I try not to rush over and act all scared so he doesn't get that sort of attention.  But I do always look (I am within eyesight and only a few steps away when he eats).

  • Yep, but I think it's just a phase.  My daughter went through that, I can't remember what age, but she has passed it.  She no longer does it.
